Hi, all! I'm new to this site and to the GMC RV in general. Like most of you, I've seen the GMC, either on the road or in Stripes or in Ben 10, which my son watches, and had NO IDEA what it was, its history or how absolutely cool it is!
I've been obsessed with motorhomes ever since I saw a Grand Villa Unihome pass in front of me in 1992. It looked like a space ship on wheels!
Since then, I've been hooked on the idea of taking a small slice of home with you wherever you go. And for a long time, I was interested in a Sportsmobile. The idea of going someplace remote and quiet and having the comforts of a relaxing hotel room was really appealing.
But when I priced out the Sportsmobile, and everything I wanted on it, I realized I'd have very little money left to actually, you know, go anywhere. Plus, even with a diesel engine, I wasn't going to get any kind of decent mileage so there'd be fuel costs on top of everything else so I can see how it would become a very expensive paperweight.
Then I saw a GMC. Wow. It looks to me like those retro drawings of what people in the 50s thought the future would be like. It was an optimistic view and the images reflected that. Likewise, the GMC just screams Happy Times! And I love some of the modern restorations done that make it look like, um, a spaceship on wheels! And it came to me THAT'S WHAT I'VE ALWAYS WANTED ANYWAY!
So now, I've added the GMC to my list of obsessions but, you know what, this one actually has the possibility of coming true because the cost is so reasonable. Even for a fully kitted out, fully restored, glossy, nice driving vehicle, I have yet to see prices that top $90,000. And, of course, there are a lot of fantastic rigs for a whole lot less than that, and even less for a GMC that would make a good canvas to draw my dream on.
And my dream is this. I want a rolling library. I want shelves and a wing back leather reading chair. I want quiet and darkness to immerse myself in my books. And then, when my eyes are tired and I want to get out for a run or explore a new city, I open the door and go. Oh, and I want to look GOOD doing it.
I think I may have found the perfect platform.
Looking forward to learning more about this beautiful ride and making plans for my future ownership.

Copil,
Depending on your mechanical skills, or what part of the country you live in, these really are very reasonable motorhomes to own. If you happen to live near a GMC specialist like me, I'm in Fremont near Jim Kanamoto's Applied GMC, then repairs are just a matter of money. If your mechanical skills are at Shade-Tree level or above then the sky is the limit. These really are easy rigs to work on and the parts are plentiful. It dawned on me when replacing the fan clutch that I've never cursed less when turning a wrench.
Others have reported that the new motorhomes are not without issues. One of our august members believes that final assembly for the new rigs occurs in the owner's driveway! Don't get discouraged by the amount of discussion devoted to broken bits here on the net. It's just what we talk about - really the unremarkable truth is that many, many trouble-free miles are collected by lots of us. And they are even fun just to look at!
This list, rallys, and other local's increase the value and the pleasure of the GMC Motorhome.

Absolutely- go spend a litle time on the Class A forum at tralierlife.com - they talk about leaks on brand new rigs and being abandoned by vendors and manufactures.

What part of Virginia are you in? I'm in NC, just South of Norfolk. I am the token Revcon owner here but I'll be happy to help in your search in the mid-atlantic.
Are you activly in the market?
They don't come up for sale that often around here but you can find some real bargains when they do.

Well, if you're around Roanoke, I'll have my 23' GMC at the dog shows in Salem the first week of August. It's a Norris upfit, but a reasonable example of the genre.

Well, now. That's about the warmest welcome I've received just about anywhere!
Thank you all for your support and encouragement. I am definitely looking forward to doing some research.
And I know what you mean about not worrying about all the. . worrying. We usually seek comfort when something goes wrong, but perfection is a lonely business. Unless you take the dog, of course.
Sadly, I won't be in California this weekend. I live in VA and will have to seek out some GMCs in this neck of the woods.

Welcome to the nuthouse.
I stopped for gas yesterday with my GMC. A guy came over to look at it and talk about it. Happens EVERY time.

It was the look and size of the Classic GMC's that got me interested initially but the real frosting on the cake are the GMC owners themselves. I believe that you will not find a more helpful and knowledgeable group of folks who will actually go out of their way to help at times of need.
