I don't understand what you mean by "carrier". Could you explain?

Is the limited slip pre-installed in the final drive, or do you
add it in later? I've been trying to understand what's involved
with adding limited slip into an existing good final drive but haven't
gotten anywhere.

The carrier is the rotating center section that holds the differential side gears, and has the ring gear bolted to it. Hence it 'carries' the differential.
