changing out the 1985 dash radio which was a olimpus radio shack model RS doesnot sell car radios anymore..... However, there are some what looks like 8 connectors on the back side of the radio with labels "back speakers", "driver speaker,", etc. is there a source for dash radios to match the old one? Thanks

I'd check with Crutchfield. They seem to have the most auto radios in all price ranges.
Most of the modern car radios use fairly similar wiring, so you should be able to match it up without too much trouble.
Only issue is that the GMC used a commoni ground for the speakers, so if newer wires weren't run, you may have to do that.

Hey George. You are correct on the shared ground, but I thought the later years did away with that. I think my 77 has 2 wires to each speaker. Not sure when that happened year wise. Also if there was an aftermarket radio in there allready, he might be lucky. Crutchfield is great for that stuff and wiring addaptors. If the dash has not been hacked you may still be able to fine somthing in the original 2 shaft step, but if it has been hacked larger, then you can go with a more late model unit. What I did was take a Delco AMFM Cass radio from the era and sent it to Antique Auto rRadio in Fla. They put their own guts in there and add a line in I use for iPod. Cassette and 5 pushbuttons still work after the mod.

Thee 78 has 2 wires per speaker as you mention so it will be fully compatible except for hole size, but that can easily be made to fit a single din radio.

Ask Crutchfield. They sell adaptors for nearly everything.

Be careful the new generation radios are all singing and dancing (they do a
lot of "stuff") and they are not intuitive to operate. Guess how I know!

i have a portable boom box on the floor does it all and plugs into the lighter and re- chargeable etc.
i phone plays apps. pandora is best, no po foob on pandora.
plays cds, and has a tv in it. cheers. Mick ; - [)

Top of the console in my coach holds the instruction manual for the installed radio... the English section runs about 40 pages. The one for the toad is just as bad. I still haven't figured how to get the HD portion to run automatically.

That's a really good point, especially in the GMC since the radio is pretty far out of the line of sight. It's really difficult to find a good radio with simple controls but there are a few out there.

Most of the 1 DIN Chassis size radio sold at Wal-Mart will fit just fine in the GMC radio hole. You will need to bend the sheet metal ears, and trim the dash. Wal-Mart also has a wire adapter kit for that era GMC vehicles. Once the radio face plate is added to the radio, you have covered your adaption to the dash. Run an anchoring strap from the back of the radio mount to the vehicle chassis. Stop the radio from vibration.
Early GMC's used a common ground return for the speakers. I think the change over was during the 1977 model run. No idea at which TZE number. This will kill a modern radio. You can get a adapter that will handle this, from Cruthfield, or run new wires to your speaker system. Running the wires up front is not difficult, but the rear might be interesting.
Some of the radios that are at Wal-Mart, as well as other suppliers, have remote controls. Velcro to steering wheel or top of dash for easy radio operation.
Since my GMC has two batteries up front, I run all accessories from the house battery, rather than the engine battery. They are wired thru a separate fuse block. I can run the radio without worry of draining the engine battery.

I have a nice Kenwood with a remote.
I can change stations etc without having to reach for the radio, works great.
It also has blue tooth so I can answer the phone over the radio. Tho I doubt I'll be getting too many calls on the road, at least I hope not
