I agree! Was the 14 inch fan in the wet bath a popular factory option?

No option. It was an after thought by someone here. Works great.

Almost nothing you read on the GMCnet/forum that is a great idea was a factory option. Lots of good ideas on the GMCMH but most of those were standard issue.

Installing a Fantastic Fan is on my to-do list as well. I am a bit nervous about cutting into the roof, and want the be sure I don't get caught up on any reinforcing ribs.

It looks like it is a tight fit. Are there any hints on how to locate the cutout correctly? I figured I could remove the old vent, then probe around to measure how for the ribs are, then try to transfer the dimensions to the inner bath module to make that cutout.

George, There is adequate room for the Fantastic Fan in most bathrooms. There are photos in the photo album on installing and the amount of cutting that is needed. But, others have reported that the bath cabinets interfere with the space needed for the 1 x 14 space needed for the Fantastic Fan. I would carefully remove the small OEM fan that is in most GMC's. Then probe for the edges of the roof support beams and make your "fit or not" decision on location in your coach, instead of totally relying on others experience. There is enough difference to make me nervous about any blanket decision on installing anything.
Good luck, photos on the project could be added to the collection of GMC knowledge.

The factory fan (Hammond?) in Hugh's Palm Beach has a molded ceiling in the
side wet bath. The whole unit is indented into the fiberglass ceiling, and
is clearly a factory option...I have never seen this before and because it
was a '78 I'm wondering if it was an option that one would have been able
to order??
Anyone else have this?

George,

Here is Arch's bath vent install ..

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=118&cat=3018

And here is a link to Wally's ..

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showgallery.php?cat=5267

I was on the phone with FF tech about replacing my old vent -- and he talked about installing the FF in the bath. His big concern was locating the power lines which he noted ran across the ceiling just to the rear of the OEM vent. Seems he had cut into the power lines in one of his first efforts.

Dennis, I bet that was Bob Beretta. He did our's in 06. Great guy. Got to visit with him in Madison last year at FMCA. He does not forget GMC folks. Should anyone be close or going by the factory on 69 and 53 in Mi. stop and see them. They may still be installing these for free if you buy it there. Tell him I sent you to get a big laugh from him.
I love companies that back their products.

That's the way my 78 Eleganza is. I'm assuming it was standard. I know at some point the small circular fan was replaced with the 14" Hammond but I thought it was before 78.

My 77 Palm Beach built in Dec of 76 has the small useless squirrel cage fan. It will get the FF as soon as I get brave enough to make the first cut.

Looks like folks first cut the hole in the ceiling of the bath module, then transfer those dimensions onto the roof panel. Seems like a good idea as there seems to be less wiggle room on the inside of the coach than on the roof.

I hate having to make cuts over my head - even with goggles and breathing masks!

Thanks for the links.
