Hey Chris,
I was very interested in your post because I have a dual quad carb Offenhauser intake that I want to put on my '73 GMC at some point. I believe that the dual carbs would offer a substantial power increase over the small, standard Q-Jet the factory put on the GMCs.

As for the gas use, I really believe it is how the dual quad carbs are linked and how hard you put your foot down. For example, if you mounted two, fairly small Holleys (with a combined CFM greater than the standard Q-Jet, of course) and you linked them progressively (i.e., so the second one only kicks in after the first is wide open or almost wide open), you could end up with gas mileage fairly similar to the Q-Jet - as long as you don't put your foot in it too often. But let's face it, the whole reason for mounting dual 4BBl is so you can put your foot in it ;)

The basic concept isn't too different from turbocharging the 455. As long as you don't sink your foot down and kick in the turbo boost, your gas mileage will be fairly similar to the non-turbo 455. But you will also have the turbo when you want/need it. The one thing you will get with the dual quads you won't get with the turbo is the intake roar of the two 4 barrels opening =) =) =)

Those are my views at least =)
Thanks,
Keith
