While at the convention my laptop, with xp, quit me. I can use it on anything except when I need to log in. I can view the GMC net but can not post. When I log in it just does not "log in". Has same issue on any website requiring me to log in. Now, that is websites where I have been before. I can log into a new website. Cleared the cookies but same problem. Don't know who to ask except yall. We can email if someone knows how to fix it.
Thanks,
Dan

Dan, have you tried the restore yet?
Click { START }
Point to { ALL PROGRAMS }
When the window appears, move the mouse up to { ACCESSORIES }and hold till next window opens
Move mouse to { system tools } and hold till next window opens
Move mouse to { SYSTEM RESTORE } and click
I believe you have had a fragmation problem or some data failed. Just running WINDOWS can cause a degration in the system.
System RESTORE has saved me quite a few times....
Generally, if the data is not lost, the restore has brought back the machine.
I use a program called DEEP FREEZE that prevents changes to the data on the hard drive... thats a long story and not for now, now we need to get you up and running again.....

September, August 2012 calenders??/ you driving a time machine???
Dan, do you keep a backup of your Hard drive???
It would come in really handy right now.
UPDATED
If I remember right, you have a fairly new Operating system don't you???
I thought I recalled that you had to reinstall your op system recently...
from what I have read, it sounds like you have either taken on a virus, or had your disc data corrupted or both.
You can download a FoxFire browser and give that a shot. WHen my bank changed the programs, MS's Internet Explorer did not work anymore. I had to get FoxFire to regain access again because its security level is higher.... In your case, it would be a fresh program that should work.
Windows XP allows you to "REPAIR" your operating system. But I would take anything I want to keep off the drive.
I had a few problems over the past couple years, I use the USB drives for keeping my data that I use and an external hard drive for long term back up.
I don't store anything on the hard drive anymore.
I also keep a back up copy of the hard drive in storage so if something like this happens, I can RESTORE it back to new again... Much faster then installing a whole op system and all the programs that go with it. I have a disk I made up that can do this for you, BACKUP and RESTORE... If interested we can talk about it...
KenB might be able to help but I think your drive is corrupting or worse, a virus. Micro Soft has a free anti Virus called Microsoft Security Essentials and it has kept my drive clear, so far. It will prompt you to download recent data for the program.
I know what you are feeling, I have been there a couple of times until I made up the BAckup and used DEEP FREEZE and MS Security Essentials... It is a lonely place when that darn drive isn't working, isn't it? I hope the answer is simple but I am thinking you will have to reinstall XP if ( 1 ) downloading FoxFire does not help or ( 2 ) the repair Op Sys does not fix the problem, located on the install disc....
Right now I would remove anything that you don't want to lose. If the program stops working and you cannot down load, my disc will run with its own op sys, its made just for this ememgency and allows you to get your files off the hard drive as long as the hard drive is still readable.
Let me know if I can help you-

If you have not set a restore point it may not be there. I got a virus (got by Kapersky) called 'XP security 2012' a few months ago..Finally got rid of the virus when they wrote the patch, but damage was done. All program associations were not restorable. Luckily with a Thinkpad you just hit the restore and recreates factory fresh from a sectioned off part of the HDD. I'd try the alternate browser and/or download Window Washer to clean things out before reformating. Saving all your files to an external and starting over is a PITA and waist of time relaoding all your apps, but you end up with a same as new machine. That's the good part.

Dan,
Is there a backup for this computer?
Whether there is or not, consider Linux.
I know, you asked how to fix and XP problem but really, the geeks have got this thing working pretty good and it takes no special skills to acquire install, and use.
The big thing is- it is stable.
No point in filling space here but if you are remotely interested email me - uscg photo at g mail dot com
I can probably have you up and going in an hour and your XP install will remain intact.
