Larry, et al,
The Cad 500 location irony arose as I considered my next step. I expect to
test the TH425 tomorrow, having done the plumbing today for the 3 pressure
gauges. After that, whether I decide to replace the transmission or
rebuild it, I'll have to start to work rebuilding the 500 -- again! Since
I've already had the crank, including thrust surface, ground once, for
$195, I'd really rather replace it with a pristine, factory-machined one.
Forgetting travel and labor, it might even be cheaper since Pull-a-Part
charges about that amount for an engine, including core and warranty
charges.
There are a couple of Eldorado's at Pull-a-Part Montgomery, AL, 148 miles
away. And I DO have a friend (and relatives) there -- even a GMCer! But
it's a '71 and a '72 -- the '71 with the engine uncovered.
Has anyone pulled an Eldorado engine in an environment similar to
Pull-a-Part? I can imagine it being VERY difficult to get to all the axle
bolts. And even the bell housing bolts.

Ken,
If you find one up here at the 2 locations let me know if you need help i can look at them first and then we can pull them. Also there is another bone yard up here by me Jones's. If you let me know the year i can look to see if they have one here. If they do they will lift it up on blocks to get underneath and help pull it out with a forklift. About the same price as pull-a-part on small items dont know about engines though.

Ted,
Thanks a lot. It now seems likely that I will be seeking a replacement
500. It appears that the Eldorado was 500 cid from 70-76, but RWD only
during 75 & 76. Naturally, I'd prefer as late and low-mileage engine as I
can find (having had such good luck with this '76 with only 76,000 miles,
reportedly).
From the Pull-a-Part web site inventory, pickin's are pretty slim there
these days. If it's not too much trouble, please check your other source.
Thanks,
Ken H.

You probably already know this, but just in case...the 70' Cad 500 is a 10.5/1 CR. So unless you plan to use premium fuel, I'd stay away from it.
Have you considered MTS or Cad Co for a long block? Just wondering...

Larry,
Wouldn't using my '76 heads, which were jiust rebuilt, lower that to 8.5:1?
At this point, I'll put the 455 back in before I'll spend that much.

I don't know about that mix. IIRC the wrong mix on heads can give you either a 17/1 CR or a 6/1 CR. I looked all over the Cad Co and MTS sites where the use to have that kind of information, but cannot find it now. I have paper copies of that information at home but will not be there for a couple of weeks. If you still need that come the 16th or so, let me know...I'll look it up.
Both MTS and Cad Co have forums that you could join and just ask those basic questions. FWIW, Cad Co has a great Tech button for the home rebuilder.

Thanks, Larry. I've also got the information on block/piston/head
combinations here somewhere. I'll check it before making any
commitment. Actually, unless I find a low mileage engine that I'm
willing to install with almost no changes, I'm really only looking for
a good crankshaft -- I don't want to have this one rebuilt again.
The only thing at
http://www.cad500parts.com/tech/EngineBuildingBasics.pdf that I didn't
do is drill the push rod holes to 9/16". Which is the sort of thing
that makes all this so disgusting -- I cannot find ANY reason for
either failure.

If it comes down to it (it won't), the engine shop has a bench always
set up for cc'ing, so I can check what I've got.
