The little 800W 2 Stroke Generator at Harbor Fright is on sale for 3 days for $99. Anyone try one? Is it noisy at 50% load? I was thinking it would be good for occasional battery keeping until I get a propane fridge.

This sounds like the one I inquired about last summer. I don't see a gen at harbor freight 800w for $99... I do see a 900 watt for $129.
I asked here about the 800, the general concensus was that there was better out there.... I was after size so I bought one.
It is a 800w two stroke, you mix oil with the gas.
It is about as loud or less than a lawn mower.
I have toyed with making a verticle stack to send the exhaust and hopefully noise up and away. Mechanical noise is very little, it is all exhaust. In contrast to the ONAN, it is mechanical and exhust noise and a lot of it.
The feed back from the buyers was that the quality control was questionable, naming the gas hose from the tank to the carb might leak on start up. Mine never did leak.
The other concern was the cheap spark plug. they suggested replacing it with a better one. I have not replaced it yet.
It starts rather easily and it can handle the RV charger and lights. It will not handle the Air con. I have started it off and on and plugged in the GMC and let her run. It would not have any problem if you were out booning but you would have to carry gas unless you can access fuel from the GMC tanks.
I think a tank is supposed to last 8 hours.
I thought it was cheap enough to try and if it destroys itself, which it has not, it isnt a big cash loss.....
I like the unit for what I described above, if that is what you are looking for....

I've been told HF has a really good return policy if you don't like it. If your only using it for a battery charger, then $99 would be worth a try. They are heavy boogers however. I was shocked for how small it is, I think it weighed 40 lbs or so.

Don't forget that as a 2 stroke burning oil, it's going to have that typical
2 cycle stink hanging around regardless of the direction that the exhaust is
pointed.

I bought one several years ago and although it was reliable and well built, it was pretty noisy--not bad, but definitley not as good as the Kipors I use now. It's a good genny for the money.

I can handle the 2 Stroke smell much better than the rich smell from my Onan. It would probably smell like my outboard, which I enjoy.
It it is all exhaust noise. then a pipe or muffler would do the trick.
No budget for the Kipor right now.

Question is can you hear it much 25-30 feet away? I have several uses for this thing other than just for the MH. I want it to run lights, soldering iron, etc. and a fan when I am out at the rocket range.

People take them to the Pull-a-Part to run electric cutting devices and
impact wrenches. I can hear them about 75 feet away. Objectionable about
25 feet.
I have been 85% deaf since birth if that helps.

I think you'll be happy with it. I used mine for a couple of years to top off my batts while camping. During the day, I don't think anyone would find it objectionable. It's mostly exhaust noise and you can direct that away from fellow campers. I fashined up a hose so that if I camped on the water, i could direct the exhaust into the water and it was virtually silent at that point.

I don't have one of those. Mine is a Honeywell inverter generator, and is probably quite a bit quieter. It cost about $500 too though. Apparently it bothered some of the people at MM-99 at Quartzsite the first year I used it. It didn't bother me so Screw 'em!!!!! (Pardon the courseness of that comment, I've been driving all day on the way home from Shawnee). Really, it shouldn't bother anybody at most outdoor events where generator use is common.

I saw those honeywell units at costco, and it, like Bell and Howell, are two brand names that seem to be stuck on just about every piece of shit that comes out of china today. Given that the "honeywell" logo was crooked, and it was $500, I passed. If I spend $500 on a genny, it will be a kipor.
I bought the HF genny for $99 and got the $20 2 year warranty and I am gonna run the piss outta this thing. If it craps out, I'll get a new one in two years or sooner.
I'll fire it up tomorrow and maybe take a video of it. I think I'm gonna make a water trap muffler for it too... Gears in my head are turning...

Chris--i doubt you will be able to kill it. I sold mine for more than I paid after 2 years of use. I think you will be just fine.

Ok, video won't really get the point across, but at Idle, and at about 1/2 load with a 500 W lamp, it isn't bad, not much louder than a Honda EU1000, but with the usual two stroke pop and burble. Sorta sounds like a Trabant, an East German Car.
At full load, or probably a bit higher at 10A, It is pretty loud, but it's all exhaust, and some intake. I think I could quiet that down a bit. I ran it with a small canister Vac. It was loud enough to drown out the Vac, but it isn't that loud of a vac to begin with.
It'll do, especially on a 20 ft cable...
