Dan,

Who offers that front brake? Do you know if a stock master cylinder will supply enough juice for the thing?

Come to think of it, I wonder if that's a dumb question. You only ever need enough brake fluid to squish the pads on the rotor, so my guess is that the master cylinder doesn't need any modification.

Open for discussion!

I would think you'd need enough hydraulic pressure to effectively stop
the larger rotor, so you'd need an appropriate amount of fluid to
provide it. It might e that the stock master cylinder is adequate.

Of course, I'm probably as wrong as can be, like usual.

HI All

Actually, dual 51mm (2 inch) bores do not equate to 102mm.

Dual 51 mm bore = 6.28 Square inches
Single 102 mm bore = 12.56 square inches
Single 80 mm bore = 7.76 square inches.

One of the factors in disk brake torque is the effective radius, that is the
distance from the center of the axle to the center of the brake piston.
Multiple small pistons have an advantage because they can be mounted farther
from the axle and not extend past the edge of the rotor, so their effective
radius can be greater than a single large piston.

If the dual 51 mm caliper provides the same brake torque as the 80 mm it
would be a better choice because of the reduced fluid requirements.

Larry,

This afternoon we had an open discussion of front ends for the GMC.

The picture Dan posted is Jim Rountree's Chevy truck hub, brake disk, and
caliper. He installed a complete front end out of a Chevy truck (knuckles,
control arms, torsion bars, and brakes) in his GMC.

Regards,
Rob M.

Rob - What great fun! I'm envious of every one of you at the convention. I hope that Jim Rountree posts something to discuss what he's done. Do you have any thoughts as to the benefits of his installation?

If it's good maybe he'll packages it as a product.

Larry,

The only thought I had was "WOW THAT'S ONE HELL OF A LOT OF WORK!"

This type of mod requires welding "stuff" to the frame. Bob Drewes upper
control arm mod does also.

Locating that "stuff" on the frame is not easy and varies from frame to
frame.

Bob and Jim BOTH noted they had to make "LOTS" of measurements to get things
right.

Neither one of them expressed ANY interest in making "kits" available.

In my opinion the liability ramifications of selling a kit for this kind of
mod prohibits doing so.

Rob M.

Pardon my question if it's dumb....

I thought the reaction brake for the rear wheels had been decided as the fix for the braking problem that GMC's have.

Or, perhaps I am not looking at the bigger picture...

Is this front brake including a better wheel bearing to replace the well worked OEM GMC wheel bearing...

Nice pic but whats the story.

Just a proud GMC owner showing off what he did. Remarkable, really. He took the front off of a 2002 Chevy truck and welded it to the front frame of his GMC. Now he has a modern front end with massive brakes.

It's much too much work for most shade-tree types, like me. I certainly do admire his work, though.

Larry,

That is a picture of the front suspension out of a 2002 Chevy 1 ton truck
installed by Jim Rountree of San Antonio, Texas.

He gave an impromptu presentation at Shawnee.

You are correct, four rear disks with the reaction arm system is the best
you can get for REAR brakes.

I can't remember the percentages but I know most of a vehicles braking comes
from the front wheels, so the bigger the disk, the larger the caliper the
better.

Yes this hub has the large bearing.

The problem is you have to be highly skilled to locate the pivot points for
the upper and lower control arms correctly!

Regards,
Rob M.
