Even though my original Onan ran great it has always been noisy and a shaker--even with the new mounts, ignition, decarburizing, etc. When it started to puke oil at an alrming rate, I decided enough was enough. I bought a very nice Emerald from one of our trusted netters and am prepping it for the install. Tomorrow, the old comes out and I plan on stripping the insulation (even though it looks good) and adding sound effective insulation. The new one will fit laterally or length wise and I haven't made up my mind which way it will go in. If I mount it laterally I will adapt it to the existing slides, but I'm tempted to mount it permanently length wise since it is designed to be a front serviceable unit. Here are the pics so far and for once, I'll try to make a decent picture trail. BTW, i think the old one either blew a front seal or the governor housing loosened up once agian. I will fix it.

I think a thousand years from now instead of digging up pottery, people will discover old U-haul trailers still in preserved condition Smile These things are built like tanks!

Watch out!!! Do you have an Emerald installation manual. If not, you need
one now. These generators are sensitive to how the ventilating ducts are
located and you can over heat one easily if you do not follow Onan's
recommendations. Both the generator and the engine can overheat. I have
zero experience with replacements on GMC's, but much experience on other
motor homes and the positioning of the vents is critical. If you need the
manual, contact me by personal email and I will see if I can find one in
PDF format for you.

Thanks for the heads up. I do have the manual and even though I'm still designing, I think I have plenty of room for flow. Thanks again.

Well I lied about the pictures. Once I started pulling the onan I forgot all about pictures. I pulled the ramp trailer up to the onan, lowered the ramp and pulled it under the Onan compartment. I never had to take the cherry picker out of the trailer. I hooked it to the eye bolt I screwed into the manifold, removed the slide bolts. and out it came. It was a 20 minute job. It's already sitting on a stand on the side of my house waiting for a cleaning and rebuild. After checking out the hole, I'm still thinking the new one will be permanently mounted for-aft rather than on the slides-they will need some serious repositioning but not impossible. The old foam insulation is intact but crispy and has to come out. Lot's of degreasing in the hole before I redo wiring and fuel hose but frankly it is all very straight forward and easy.

Bob,

If you're looking to get rid of your old Power Drawer, Sandy's RV Center, in Tucson, might be interested. They have a '78 26' (model unknown to me, at least) GMC that belongs to a guy from Prescott, whose father was the original owner. It is missing it's generator, and the guy wants one put back in it. He wants to be able to run both roof AC units, so it needs to be a big one like the missing 6-K.

Give them a call if you are interested in selling yours. They might be interested in trying to resurrect it for this coach.

I'll definitely keep it in mind Carl. I'm already degreasing it and trying to find the source of the large leak. I won't sleep till I find and fix it. It's too nice of a genny to let sit. It would be great if it found a new home.
