We bought gas in Terre Heute and changed drivers.
We had watching the storm both in the sky and on radar but just out of Terre Heute, it caught us. When I say it caught us I mean like a cat catching a mouse by the tail.
Rain and wind all at once - Bang! Not just a little wind. Bare trees were bent 90!! The coach shock violently. The rain made visibility a problem, so I backed down. I had to decide which lane I wanted each end in.... The coach had an attack angle of about 15~20°. So, if my end was in the lane, the back was half in the lane to the right. Kind of like doing a crosswind landing, but I couldn't get the upwind wing down.
I got a little respite when we went into a valley. At the top of the hill was a row of lights - either an exit or a rest area - Good, I wanted OFF The Road Now... Mary shouted (she had to so I could hear her over the rain and wind noise) that there was a rest area ahead and I replied in the same manner that it was my every intention to get there.
We rolled in and hid between a larger coach and a semi. Chaumiere was still shaking (so were we). The the hail came. Just a little short of marble size. We sat there until the radar assured us that most of the storm had passed.
Written in the quiet parking lot at Casino Queen in East St. Louis.
