After 1500 miles towing and driving, and I dunno how long the boot was gone when I got it, I replaced the left drive axle on the toadstone today. Hour and a half, plus 30 minutes to get the muck off my hands and arms after. After the discussions here, and remembering a couple of loose bolts on a previous VW Stationwagon, I snugged them tighter than the (factory) set they had coming off. And added a bit of red Loctite - cos I didn't have any blue. Test drive to turn in the core axle, clatters along like a happy VW diesel. The omnious grinding from the left front is now gone. This is the first one I've had to disconnect the front suspension to replace (Type I Jettas have room to remove the drive axle without anything in the way), three bolts on the control arm and the bolt on the sway bar. Everything back centered on the clean spots and it goes good. I am now ready to tackle new ground - probably the injectors in my pickup which has
decided to cease idling.
