After 1500 miles towing and driving, and I dunno how long the boot was gone when I got it, I replaced the left drive axle on the toadstone today. Hour and a half, plus 30 minutes to get the muck off my hands and arms after. After the discussions here, and remembering a couple of loose bolts on a previous VW Stationwagon, I snugged them tighter than the (factory) set they had coming off. And added a bit of red Loctite - cos I didn't have any blue. Test drive to turn in the core axle, clatters along like a happy VW diesel. The omnious grinding from the left front is now gone. This is the first one I've had to disconnect the front suspension to replace (Type I Jettas have room to remove the drive axle without anything in the way), three bolts on the control arm and the bolt on the sway bar. Everything back centered on the clean spots and it goes good. I am now ready to tackle new ground - probably the injectors in my pickup which has
decided to cease idling.

Johnny,
The next time, try a little harder to get the axle out. You MAY have to
release one end of the shock absorber, but I've changed several axles, on
each side, without removing anything else -- can't tell you exactly where
everything has to be positioned/aimed, but it CAN be done.

Ken -
Your comment about releasing the shock absorber tells me we're at cross purposes here. I was referring to the drive axle on my toadstone, which is a Type II VW Jetta - and on which the drive axles won't come out without moving suspension parts. The shock removel tips me off - VW uses McPherson struts in front, they don't have seperate shocks. The comment contrasted the job with my previous Type I Jettas, on which the axles >are< removable without disturbing anythog else. Clear as mud now? :) :)

Johnny,
Yeah, I thought you were talking about R&R of GMC axles vs VW. Lots of
folks (including me) have made that task more difficult than necessary. In
particular, many remove the oil filter, which I find unnecessary.

I'm lucky there - PO had JimB go through the front end before I got the coach. It oughta go some years before it needs kicking again.

On the MkII VW chassis all you need to do is remove the front table bushing bolt and then swing the table rearward, pivoting on the rear bushing bolt. This give lots of additional room to get the CV axle out without disturbing the alignment.
This also works for the MkIII & MkIV vdubs.

Table? :)
I'll hafta get back under and look. Took 3 10mm bolts to swing the strut outa the way. Put them back in the same place, ran it over to Cumming and back today, alignment unchanged.
