Probably the reason the bolts are coming loose is because they were not
replaced and torqued to at least 65 ft/lb as per page 7-31 of the
maintenance manual. If torqued to 65 ft/lbs, the bolts are stressed very
close to their yield point and should not be re-used. Replacement bolts
are cheap and available at most industrial supply houses, McMaster Carr,
and GMC vendors. McMaster Carr defines these bolts as extreme-strength
12-pt flange head alloy cap screws. They are stronger than grade 8 bolts.
I bought mine from Vancouver Bolt in Vancouver, WA since I didn't want a
box of 25 as McMaster sells them. I also bought a 1/2 drive, 3/8 inch, 12
pt socket to minimize the possibility of rounding heads.

I replaced and torqued the bolts as per the manual when I installed a 3:21
final drive several years ago. The GMC has gone at least 10,000 miles
since then. When I checked the bolts prior to driving to middle GA in
2009, they were still tight. This is with no loctite or tie-wire.

The manual is a little confusing on the correct torque. In section 7 it
calls for 65 ft/lb and in section 3C-8 it calls for "NEW" bolts torqued to
75 ft/lb. I torqued my bolts per section 3C-8.

As Arch said JWID.

bolts. I think there are 6 on each side. On driver side it is where the
axle bolts to final drive. On pass side it is where it bolts to the stub
axle. They should be multi sided so you will need a socket that will fit at
least 8 sided bolt.
