I wanted to download an update to my Macs operating system.
I was tethered to my iPhone and it told me that the 1.34 GB update would take approx. 2 hours.
I knew there was a McDonalds about 3 miles from my house in Colorado so I thought of Gene Fisher and headed over to McDonalds
HOWEVER, Gene didn't tell us that their WiFi connection isn't exactly high speed. I would call it low speed or no speed.
I signed on and it told me it would take 9 hours for the download. Not wanting to have lunch AND dinner at McDonalds I went back home and downloaded it from my iPhone.

did too
did too
Mifi is even slower, but it is there.
free is not fast, but is better than $80 a month,
and I make free phone calls on my iPod
and I up date/backup to my own cloud (pogoplug), and that takes a long time
my home DSL is only 1.2 mb, and I pay for 3mb. I complain, and they say
"so leave"
Internet on a cruise ship is $.75 per minute of connect time ( it takes me
10 min. just to log on;>)
Clearwire, and Hughes networks are limiting data bandwidth by the mb.
I signed on and it told me it would take 9 hours for the download. Not

that is a good thing. be careful, they say 5.0xx will not work with jail
break, yet

gary berry, tethered his iPhone, but the hotspot will not run his Kindle
(do not know what that is about)
the isp's have us by the short hair, and they say "streaming , like
netflix" is killing them. So they raise their price, and limit the data
bandwidth, when ever they want to.
the tablet / phone technologies are interesting, but it is not clear when
our networks are all going to support them.

Well, I thought it was great when McD's announced free WiFi. That lasted here for about 3 months. Now they don't turn it on. The Wendys next door has WiFi, I think it's on purpose but it is dead slow.
When I need to "borrow" WiFi signals, I can use the County Court house, it is offered for the Poor Jury duty folk in waiting and there is a "hot spot" outside the building, with a parking meter... No, this was not intended, its one of those things that happens. The speed is fast.
Haven't tried the Paneras or any of the coffee palaces yet. I did try a library but was surprised to find it was turned off.
I also tried the "FREE WIFI" list from the internet. Most of the locations in my area were either weak or not working.
I agree with Gene, McD's is not lightening fast, but better then $80 bucks a month if you can handle driving to the WiFi Signal every day.
My thoughts

I've got a great free app on my iPad2 called Plug Hunter. It uses GPS & shows locations that have power access & WiFi. You can input new locations & it updates with all the input info.
Also available for iPhone.

Has anyone run a speed test while at Macs? I haven't really noticed that they are that slow so possibly they vary across the country.

I went to the manager every day and said "you wifi is broken"
says free wifi on the door.....
finally they got it "fixed" and has stayed that way
You must have just stood there, with your chest stuck out, wavy hair blowing in the wind, err, the fan blowing your hair, and said, "I OWN A GMC, WHERES THE WIFI", or you just gave him the EVIL EYE-- Grrrrr... lolololol
Then again, with it on the door, the thought of misrepresented advertising comes to mind.
