JP, When you remove the shaft assembly and disassemble it, if you
thoroughly clean the old bearing, you can USUALLY find the manufacturers
name, country of origin, and a part number. After you have this information
in hand, go to your local bearing supply company with the bearing in hand
and have them match it up with Timken cross over numbers. If you by chance
don't have a bearing supply house in your area and are forced to use auto
zone or another supplier, be sure to very carefully inspect the new
bearing. If it is manufactured offshore be very certain that it is better
than the one you are replacing. There is not much of a problem in using a
bearing that has been in service for some time if it still has good lube
inside. Some of those bearings have removable shields that can be pried out
with a pocket knife or snap on cotter pin puller. Once the shields are off,
you can thoroughly clean and relube the bearing, replace the shields, and
you are good to go. When you reinstall the shaft assembly, be sure to
center the slots in the bracket with the hold down fasteners. Not rocket
science, but if that bearing isn't good, it makes a heck of a lot of
vibration and noise, and it can leave you stranded by the side of the road.

Jim,
Thanks for the tips. I fashioned a puller using 1/4" threaded rod and a 1/4" thick steel plate. The bearing was on good and tight but with a little help from my hammer it came off. It is the same make and model as shown in the parts book and is likely the original. The remaining grease was thoroughly coagulated and came out in chunks. It had the removable shields and once I cleaned it up it was in pretty good shape except for some lateral play. I'll pay close attention to the pedigree of the new bearing if I decide not to rebuild it.
