My 76 Palm Beach had been painted years before I bought it. There is corrosion and peeling paint on the aluminium above the stainless steel rub rail that I would like to clean up.

In the 60's all our Marine Corps airplane aluminium fuselage parts were primed with zinc chromate berore painting.
Has anything new been developed for priming raw aluminium in the past 50 years?

I'm not looking to make a show quality paint job; I just want to stop the corrosion and not have the new paint peeling off in the next 10 years.

I will also be painting aluminium window frames which have some bare spots.

All suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks

I won't comment on the primer but Zinc has always been a good choice. I had that problem after a repaint. Make sure you put some kind of material between the stainless strip and the body to keep it from happening again after you fix it.

I used a self-etching primer and it failed. Maybe powdercoat would work, but this seems to be a problem since new.

Has anyone ever tried stripping the aluminum down and polishing it (ala Airstreams)? Might make for an interesting look, though you'd have to do something different for the front and rear caps.

Randy,
What exactly failed? Etching primer bonding to bare aluminum or paint bonding to the primer?

I bought 3 different primers today. Their clames are:

Sem self etching primer(adheres to autobody steel and aluminum)

Rust-oleum self etching primer (prepares bare metal, aluminum and fiberglass surfaces to promote maximum adhesion)

Rust-oleum Professional Aluminum Primer(for use on bare aluminum)

Any one have any experience with any of these products?

I carefully prepped the surface and then used SEM Self-Etching Primer with a Enamel Topcoat and the primer peeled up in less than 3 months. Maybe an Alodine and topcoat with Aluma grip but powdercoat would be easier. If POR15 had UV protectant, I'd use that. It never peels off anything, no matter how much you wish it would!

Gene,

I think zinc chromate is no more! I wanted to buy some Downunder but the
stuff I got didn't have the zinc or the chromate. I apologize for being
vague, however, I'm in the USA and the paint is in Australia.

I've used phosphoric acid to etch aluminum for painting.  It seems to work OK but I don't know how it compares to other treatments.  Home depot sells it as Prep & Etch.

When we painted airplanes, after strip and clean, we etched witrh phosphoric acid and then used AlumiGrip <tm> wash primer.  Top it with AlumiGrip paint and you get  a good looking product which will withstand raindrops at 500MPH.  Which nobody but JimK is going to get one to go that fast, but it's nice to know if you did....
