I guess I owe everyone an update -- I've been a little quiet the past
couple of days.

After tinkering with the lifer pre-loads all weekend, on Monday I
finally got a combination of parts that gave me what I consider
acceptable settings.

Tuesday didn't go as quickly as I'd expected, primarily because of a
dumb old amateur's mistake -- finally caught by the pro. Yep, I
reversed the main bearing caps. :-(

Even after correcting that the thrust clearance was still only about
0.001", so we had to machine the front face of the thrust bearing.
With that corrected, everything seemed to fall into place so that I
was able to finish assembling the engine yesterday and haul it home.

Today was my mother's 95th birthday, so we had a little lunch party
with her; she wan't up to more. I tried to use only my own tools at
my friend's shop, so I had quite a bit of re-positioning them to do
today. Plus, I finally backed my S-10 into the 3' high by 2' OD pot
SHE insisted on putting beside the driveway a year ago. Rigging a way
to lift the fern & root ball for HER and the yard man to re-pot it
didn't help my schedule -- didn't even help my standing with HER very
much either. :-(

Tomorrow, with any luck at all, I'll get the engine and transmission
mated, the accessories re-mounted, and the paint touched up. It
should only take a few minutes to position it under the coach.

Saturday will be the whole family's day to celebrate Mother's
birthday, so there's no work scheduled then. My son & grandsons have
promised to stay through Sunday to help with raising the drive train
back into position. I'll probably spend most of next week
reconnecting everything and stopping leaks. I HATE anti-freeze.
Seems like I always have a drip or ten and because the darned stuff
won't evaporate, I can't figure whether they're from leaks or old
puddles.

I should have 10 days or so to do test drives before departing on the
750 mile trip to Shawnee.

See Y'All there.

Ken H.
