Up for consideration in the Washington State legislature this year is an alternative to tire chains. They go on in minutes, and are compared to giant shower caps.
They are called Tire Socks, and are widely used in Europe according to an editorial in The News Tribune.
I checked on line;http://tirechaindealer.com/tire-sock.php
And while they don't have 215/85R16 yet, I suspect some demand would help.
They appear to create more friction with icy surfaces.
I wonder if they would also work on grassy slopes.
They may not be approved devices in many States yet, but look to be between snow tires and chains, with none of the disadvantages of studded tires.
