One of my kids Olds Cutlass wagons has an intermitant problem. Poor throttle response and poor fuel economy. Like 1/2. Wife had a 90 and we got 25-26 mpg's. One tank was 13 and most have been 18-20. Have a manual and have done most of what was recomended. Now I'm looking for a scanner. Tech ones and twos can not just look at and erase codes but can read in real time all the sensors. FI duty time,,,etc. They also can turn things on and off. EGR,evap purg, cooling fans, etc. I'd like to have the capabilty of the Tech one and two with out the price. Their are some scanners (code readers) that are in the 3 to 4 hundred range that can look at the sensors in real time,,,,,but iI don't know about the on/off funtions. Any one have one they like????? thanks,,,PL

Also,,,,Ken,,, got that Caddy back together and do you still have the preoiler.??? I can make or loan you mine if you loaned yours out,,,,,PL

Paul,

Thanks for the reminder -- I've got to hunt up the pre-oiler. I must
have it here somewhere but I don't know where at the moment. Thanks
for the offer to make me one but in view of the schedule, I'll have to
make one here (more likely get my machinist buddy to do it) if I can't
find the old one. It's probably like the nice neat package of 16
pushrods from the previous Cad rebuild. 2 days of hunting before I
looked under the pile of gasket packages containing stuff nobody knows
what fits.

I moved the engine into the "engine room" today -- that is, it's all
cleaned up out-side and in- and ready for reassembly. Also checked
all the lifter pre-loads (as I forgot to do the last time around.
Looks like I'll wind up with a mix of standard length pushrods and
0.030" over-length to get within (or near) 0.030"=0.050" preloads. I
may go to the shop tomorrow and take care of that and button up the
top side.

I'll wait until Monday to drop the crank back in -- it's TOO heavy for
me alone, especially trying to maneuver around 8 connecting rods. :-)

With any luck, I should have the engine reassembled Monday. Tuesday
will be transmission+engine day. My son & grandsons will be here next
weekend, so I'll have help re-installing it all. Not sure how much
help I'll get from them on re-plumbing & re-wiring though. Should be
plenty of time for that before we head out to Shawnee around the 20th
or 21st. I HOPE. :-)

Somewhere in there we'll work in my mother's 95th birthday party.
We're going to miss Elaine's aunt's 99th on the 25th of March in FL,
due to Shawnee. Sure hoping I don't have to have one of those myself.

So you are just going to skip 99 and go from 98 to 100?

Paul,

I have a simple Innova scanner (model 3100) -- but they offer software for your laptop that creates a dash panel and such so you can get the real time information. I have not tried that -- yet. You can go to their website for better explanations. They were offering no-charge trial subscriptions.

Ken,

Make a rope sling off the ends of the crank and hang it from the
hook
on the cherrypicker. Get some plastic tubing with an I.D. that
will just
slide over the rod bolts. Put a 6 or 8 inch piece on each rod
bolts. so
you won't nick the crank throws. Turn the curl in the tubing
outward
so as to guide the crank throws in. Then you can lower the crank
very
slowly and attach each rod cap as necessary. Slow and careful.
You can tell I'm used to doing everything alone.

Gary,

Good idea on the cherry picker -- but there's not one in the "engine
room", nor anything else to hang from. But John Beaver, my engine
guy, slings cranks around all day; he wouldn't even let me help him
carry the Dodge 400 crank, with weights attached, to the drill press
from the balancer today. Maybe the two of us can manage the Cad's
crank.

The rod bolt protectors have been on ever since the caps were removed
-- but they're not long enough for your trick to work. Maybe I'll
make some longer ones, 'cause I've violated the rule to not move the
pistons after pulling the crank. ;-(

What does the Cad manual give for the lifter pre-load? 0.030"=0.050"
is what I've found, but I'm not sure it's Cad's spec. I'm having a
little trouble matching it on a couple of cylinders. On one of them I
don't think it will be possible to get both intake and exhaust in
spec, even with milling or shimming. DON'T ask me how that can be --
it just IS. Int.=0.056"; Ex=0.019". :-( Yep, I'll recheck it
tomorrow, but the previous recheck was within a couple of thousandths
of th those. I guess I'll have to order a custom Crane pushrod for
that one...No, with standard and +0.030" push rods to play with, I can
get both in -- or close.

Paul,

You didn't happen to mention what model year the Cutlass is....
Are you looking for an OBDii scanner? Older GM were a proprietary and then ODB and I don't remember the years.

I have an Auterra Dyno-Scan. It will let me look at all most all of the ECU inputs and functions in real time on a laptop screen. It will do some tests, but I do not believe it can do very much control (nothing like the OE boxes I know). I did run it on an XP machine and now on a Win7.

You could go to their website <www.auterraweb.com>and read the manual, and even download the software package (I believe) and look at that. If you think it will be a help, I could very easily toss the cables and the disk I have (old) in a USPS tiny flat rate box. I use it rarely, but would like to get it back.

Let me know.

Matt

I don't know much about them but every so often, Harbor Freight has a scanner that supposed to scan GM cars. They have one for foreign cars too. The price was really cheap, like $99... I told the mechanic he needed to get one. lolol He has an expensive scanner for GM Ford and Chrysler but he can't read the exports and can't justify buying the high priced scanner since he only works on an export model every so often when one comes in.

I don't have one so I can't comment on how well, or not, this scanner works, I just saw it in the flyer a couple times.

You really don't need a scanner. You can also buy a CAN ODBII code reader for a lot less money. I bought one for about $39 that can read my
GM codes and my Geo Tracker (which is really a Suzuki). I have also used it on Fords and Plymouths and several foreign cars.

The main difference between a more expensive scanner and a code reader is that the scanner will show the description of the code problem whereas with a code reader you have to look up the code number in a booklet to find out what it is.

I have a OBD I cable, AKA as a AL/DL cable that works with my laptop. If I
remember right, it costs about $60.00 or so. The cable comes with a CD that
contains software that is compatible with the GM ECU that Howell uses. With
this cable, you can read stored trouble codes,(if any) and read all the
parameters in real time as the engine is running, as well as store them
while you are conducting a drive test so that you can interpret them later.
If you have a knock sensor and Electronic spark control on your system, it
will read that too. Takes some sorting out but works better than the
trouble code readers do. JWID.

I also have the OBD cable but now that I have the EBL system on my GMC motorhome TBI I don't use my code reader anymore on the GMC as I can read any error codes on my computer screen when using it with the GMC.

I do, though, still use the code reader occasionaly with my Tracker toad as it is a whole lot easier to just plug it in and read any error codes than it would be to drag out my laptop to the toad and plug it in. I just keep the small code reader in the Tracker glove box so it is at hand when I want to use it.

If anyone needs the OBD cable at a discounted price, let me know.

Did you ever tell us the year??? For pre 96 GM a 1/2 of a bent paperclip in the top right 2 cavities of the ALDC will blink out the codes starting with 12 as x xx, x xx, x xx three times followed by the the set codes if any, if none, its 12 over and over. Is there a code set? For more detailed pre 96 I have an OTC 4000E and and for 96 and up an Auto Xray. I'm sure all these have come down in price since I bought them. I like the stand alone devices so I don't wreck my computer in the procees of fixing a car. I bought scanners over code readers as you can see data. Very helpfull for setting TPS voltages etc. Besides all the computer stuff check all the good old fashioned stuff like mechanics did before computers----Thermostat stuck open, vac hose cracked (plastic ones can look good and be bad and rubber couplers from hard to soft line split), corosion on coil or cap terminals/ inside ends of ignition wires, wires that look good but are bad, air duct partly off at MAF, EGR stuck or carboned, TPS and min idle air set wrong from someone turning screw (thats not an idle speed screw), vac hoses misrouted, low coolant giving wrong temp data to computer etc.
