You can get similar cooling results by insulating the ground during the
day, then uncovering it at night, so heat is lost from the uncovered
space. I've heard it's possible to make ice cream this way in the
desert. Haven't tried it, though

Any of you see the movie "Mosquito Coast" if memory serves me there was an
ammonia tower that used the heat of the sun to generate power and provide
refrigeration. No power grid there at all.
