I got this thing about a month ago to shave a half ton off my tow weight (still have the Jeep Wrangler, though). Anyway, my question is that going down the highway at 55, 5th gear, this thing is turning 3000 RPM. That seems pretty high. The Jeep is turning less than 1900 RPM in 5th gear at 65 MPH. Both rigs use 15" tires.

Yup--sounds about right--ask Jim Bounds about his experience.

It (the Suzy) gots an 80 c.i.d. engine which is essentially a scaled up motorcycle motor. The jeep gots - depending on year - a 244 c.i.d. pushrod engine. One makes power off 80 inches by spinning hell out of it. A technology the motorcycle manufacturers are well versed in for many years.

I had one for about 3 years. Got rid of it last summer, wish I never had. Top speed of 55mph, 3,200 rmp.

Larger tires will reduce RPM at
all speeds (and give you low speedometer readings) and increase ground clearace. I bet if you
checked wrecking yards, you could find some large rims that fit your
vehicle.
I almost bought a Samurai last January. It weighed about 2200 so would have towed great. The owner told me it would not go much over 55 mph and that it was not fun trying to keep up with larger 4X4's in the desert. I have a Jeep Cherokee I tow, but I rarely need to be off road. This year I bought a Geo Metro advertized by Steve Ferguson. It only weighs 1600 pounds and will go down the freeway at 65 miles per hour at 3200 rpm. I sacrificed the off road fun for 50+ miles per gallon. If I did not have the Jeep, I would be looking for a Samurai as most driving would not be highway and it would offer a lot more fun per pound than the Geo. The Samurai and it's relatives are the most common Toads I have seen behind GMCs. I am sure there are many a good reasons for that.

On second thought, I haven't seen it for 35 or 40 years, it could be on the
