After offering this unit on a TRUE one day sale for $299,
the seller posted it on a 1 month listing for $399. Today,
the listing price is back down to $299, with free shipping
and 76 units available.

Hyundai is a brand that has a pretty good reputation in
general.

Does anybody have any comments, one way or another
about this unit?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/190635334785

I know that folks have recommended the Kipor, but I
missed out on that last "good deal" for those. I had
ordered one, but it was on a Saturday and I the seller
canceled my order on Monday morning.

I have one of the Harbour Freight 900 watt generators, it will run my power converter and a compressor driven small frig.  Would work dry camping in a cool place.  Would probably run the furnace blower if you have a new furnace cutting off the frig or something.  Could have use, the reason I like the fact it came from Harbour Freight is you could buy a warranty on it and bring it back when it crapped out.  Can you send back the Hyundia unit when it craps out because chances are as cheapo as those little things are it will?

The only thing stopping me from pulling the trigger on it if I recall it was pretty heavy for a unit that is 1KW. For $299 shipped it almost seems foolish not to get it however. If it lasted a few years even you'd get your money worth. Most junky products however IMHO last with a lack of abuse.

It says 60dB but how noisy is that? Years ago I got a Coleman 1500W that
was "certified" by US Forestry for noise. That thing is NOISY! I use the
small Honda's as a benchmark for noise.

It didn't say at what distance or no/full load so it's hard to judge. If that is at 27 ft full load it won't be too bad--still more than a Kipor or Honda.

I think the Kipor and Honda say 53 db. Now, what does that mean? Not much really. What I did was set my Kipor next to my father in law's Honda and fire them both up, kill one, then swap. To my ear, noise was same. At Quartzsite Yamaha says their's is quietest, but, sounds about like my Kipor when they put a load on it. If you buy this one bring it to Shawnee, we can do a scientific test on the thing. Very Happy

Thanks, Dan.

I suspect that video is showing both gensets with no load.
A local ham friend has one of the Hondas, but they run about
900-1000, IIRC.

For emergency use and possible ham radio Field Day use,
I suspect it would be quiet enough.

That's a fairly common issue with Kipors. It's an easy repair with an off the shelf contact switch. Many times it is only the little lever on the switch that needs to be bent out a bit.

I'm a Kipor fan and at one point had an equivalent Honda as well. The published numbers are the same and they sound the same to me as well. I do think the Yamaha is quieter however. DBa measurements can be tricky since it is not a linear scale. 1dba can make a huge difference in actual sound density.

Bob, I am not too concerned how loud my Kipor is. With the solar covered roof we just don't need a generator except running down the road for roof air. Most of our Kipor use has been here at home keeping the tv going while the storm passes over. I try to run it once a year to burn the last year's gas out if we have no storms. If we were living in Az full time I would do as you do and have two so we could run roof air. Kipor warranted mine after it was way out of warranty. Sent me an inverter free of charge. I would buy another if I needed one.

Mac,

I can't comment on that particular unit, but if I were in the market for one, I would probably take a chance on it at that price. That said, I would make sure there is an authorized warranty service center nearby, for that brand, before I ordered one. That way, if it conks out, you have some recourse other than having to ship it back to the seller. That happened to me with my 2-K Honeywell and they ended up replacing it through the local warranty center

For those interested, Tractor Supply - at least the local one in Oakwood - has a Champion genset, 3.5KW, 4KW surge on the shelf at $329 plus tax n tip. Looks like it would fit easily in the bay in a 23'. Pull start though, you got to step outy and yank.
