I am aware that this topic has little to do with GMC's...or maybe it has a
lot...

In Google, to the left, it lists my home town. I know what is available
locally, I am interested in a WORLD wide web search!

How do I rid myself of the localized searching based on a postal or zip
code and get true world wide searches?

I like Google but I've had enough. Hello Yahoo...but even that drops off
to Yahoo.ca from Yahoo.com...after a few searches..

Help ! <VBG>

If you made the mistake of installing Google chrome, uninstall it.

Just in case it's an issue, do you mean it's not installed on your computer, Mike? Even if you're not using it, it could be installed.

Watch this video, it kind of explains it through "filter bubbles".
Suffice it to say, Google, etc are doing that intentionally - not just
with location but with previous searches. You can try and clear all your
cache - content, cookies, etc.

I think maybe Dan in NC has better suggestions than I do. I'm a Mac guy and also haven't installed it, and even more likely I won't, since reading here.

I've used Google Chrome for over a year with no problems. What is the problem? I'm not arguing - just asking.

Poor wording on my part. If it works for you, there isn't anything wrong with it. I never installed it or used it because I didn't see any reason to. My wife and son both tried it and after a couple weeks they both uninstalled it because they didn't like it (I had to hear the complaining until they stopped using it). YMMV

Deleted doesn't necessarily mean uninstalled. But since I never installed it, and didn't help my family members eradicate it from their computers, I can't tell you how to absolutely remove it.
Check your browser add-ons and see if disabling one or more of them fixes your problem. You would be surprised at how bad those things can slow down your browsing.
The only three add-ons I have enabled are Shockwave, PDF Reader, and Java.

Hi Michael

Google (and others) are targeting "Hyper local" based on your IP address.

Have you tried Mozilla Firefox?

I use Foxfire but the search engine is what's irritating me...<g>
If I search for beer with Google, I get all the NS brands for the first 2
pages. If I search with Yahoo, it's almost as bad.

I know beer will help, but I have to find the right one! <VBG>

Mike,

Have you tried looking at all the settings available when you click the little gear in the top right? There are a lot of things that can be configured to restrict or open what you see.

I have all of the presonalization shut off, but I still only use Google for a few things because the paid sites so outnumber the interesting sites. I have the same problem with Yahoo, YP and Yellowbook, but there the geography is the reverse problem. They seem to think that either everything in SE MI is of interest or, because of the location of my ISP, I really want to drive to northern Ohio.

When it comes to these things, I use everything at some time or another. It all has problems one way or another. I run Firefox, Chrome and EI as browsers, do searches with Google, Bing, Metacrawler and Dogpile, I use Turkey Vulture (oops Thunderbird) for most of my mail, Gmail for some (but it does not do multiple @ddresses well, and Yahoo for a little - very little as it has not capability to receive from multiple @ddresses.

Ain't this all fun.

Internet is a powerful communicator, but I expect I will look to abandon it some day when it is completely overloaded by people trying to sell me stuff I don't and never will want. I all ready have spam filters a mile wide and all the pop-blocker set and cookies killed.

Matt

After creating a Google ad words campaign for my wife's law practice it became even more apparent to me that the term "search engine" is something of a misnomer.  It's a search engine primarily for those things with little or no commercial value.  Otherwise Google, Yahoo, Bing etc are really advertising engines masquerading as search engines.  If you're willing to pay you can get ranked high on the search lists.  Local businesses obviously target customers that live in their area and that is done by IP address.

Although I haven't tried to do so, perhaps one could achieve a "WORLD wide web search" by using an anonymous web surfing tool that conceals the IP address.

I just googled beer in my Safari browser and the only local hits in the first three pages were the local distributor I use (that I've googled several times in the past for their hours) and a local pub (though many, many more are nearer. I think I might have googled them a few months ago as their wings were so highly recommended). All the other hits were general info, various brands, beer making etc.

I've been very happily using Safari since Apple developed it. It's great for organizing my bookmarks. When I click on Bookmarks, I created 36 folders from Architecture to YouTube, one of them being of course, GMC. In the GMC folder, the first 8 are bdub, gene's, black list sites etc., then 10 folders from Articles to Tech Tips. Inside each one of those may be 10 or 20 sites or more folders. I must have thousands of bookmarks but because of the organization I can access what I want in a few seconds. I'm sure that's doable with other browsers, but as a right brained person, I need it's simplicity and elegance of design to get the most out of it.

It is available for the PC and it's a free download. Just google Safari. Some may want to check it out.

That's the crux of it. It is NOT what browser you use - it is the engine
where the query is placed. They are ALL doing it now - not just search
engines. It depends on what IP address the anonymizer gives you. If it
is a generic 192.168.x.x then you may have better luck getting
world-wide results.

I just did an interesting search on Beer from this computer. The first one was done using my cable ISP and the results think I am in Hobart, IN in the next county. I did exactly the same search but I signed on using my neighbor's ISP which is a DSL provider. I got different result and Google thought I was in Crown Point, IN which is also in the next county. On cable I sometimes get results thinking that I'm in Griffith, In. I'm in none of these but Griffith is a major sight for my ISP. They must be using the IP address to determine this.

Hi Mike,

Are you on google.ca or .com? If you are not on .com, give it a go from Canada. It behaves a bit differently. There's a link on the bottom of .ca to go to .com and it will stick as long as your 'cookies' remain.

I've also had a lot of fun using say, google.de (you don't need to speak German - buttons are all in the same place), or some of the others 'flavours'. It really throws up some random and sometimes very interesting results.

For sure though, .ca is catering to that indicated region and it is tough to get around.

BTW, searching for i.e 'beer' is far too generic. Most engines will throw a fit at a simple keyword like that and just fall back to a previously indexed result.

HTH,

Gord
