Might consider using a 5gal bucket and fill it with clean water. Should get you a pretty accurate volume measurement.

Even if it's trapezoidal, cone, or cylinder in shape, basic geometry will
tell you how many cubic inches of volume it has, and after that divide by
231 for the number of gallons. Even if one corner is truncated or there
is a hollow area, it will get you a fairly close figure - more accuracy
requires calculating the volume of the hollow, and knowing the thickness of
the walls of the tank.

Even if you have to break measurement of the tank up into series of separate
rectangular and triangular pieces, you can get very accurate results - at
least as accurate as trying to measure the capacity with more than a 1 gal
bucket.
