In case you don't start your day with a check of JimB's Daily Pose, he told us today of a show that will air on Sunday night on the Travel Channel featuring the GMC motorhomes. Sound like it should be fun to see!
Either that or I can tune in the Grammies to see a bunch of performers that I don't recognize, but my kids might.

Just saw the show, and it was great! Besides the GMC, it did show some fun ideas that people had in creating their own personalized RVs.
JimB and the fellow drag racers were neat to watch, and I like the glimpses of the Duramaxx project coach as well.

So, I have a night off from other responsibilities, for the first time in
about a year, and the Redhead and I are just watching junque TV like House
Hunters. She decides it's time for bed and leaves the room, so I pull up
the channel guide to see what else is on. I see this listing for Killer RV
Upgrades with mention of "classic motorhomes" in the description. Okay,
I'll watch that. After seeing the last bit of the show on houseboats, they
play the leader for the next show during the commercial break.
HEY! I KNOW THAT GUY!
"Redhead! Come in here! You gotta see this!"
So, yes, it was sort of a goofy show, and definitely not aimed at actual
motorhome owners and aficionados. It was really aimed at people wanting to
watch other people do goofy things with a surplus of time and money on
their hands. And in that comparison, the GMC crowd was the least goofy of
them all--it was as if we had become respectable. Who knew? But respectable
compared to a guy who turned a step-van into the conning tower of a sub (he
should stick to software, by the way), or, my favorite of them all, the guy
who turned a fire truck into a VW Bus with a glandular condition (and
horns!). So, not _too_ respectable.
A little later, "That's Larry!"
Redheaded response: "Who?"
Me: "The MOTORHOME, of course!"
Is it possible people could think we are hip?
A few years ago, I promised the Redhead a trip to the beach. An opportunity
came up for a gathering of the weirdos (including me, of course) who
collect ex-Soviet camera equipment, and it was on the way to the Jersey
Shore. So, we booked a spot at a nearby state park and headed to Belmont
Beach or some such. As we were driving down the main drag along the beach,
we saw a group of surfer dudes. One of them pointed at us, and we could
read his lips from fifty feet away, "I WANT one of those!"
Dang, I knew I should have painted those hippie flowers on the
(ever-diminishing) remains of the original Sky Blue.
Every year, the Redhead and I go to a bluegrass festival at Watermelon
Park, which is on the banks of the Shenandoah River. After five years or so
of attending in the motorhome, the GMC is now a standard fixture. By the
way, if you wanted to know where the hippies who are not quite up to the
rigors of Burning Man go, check out your local bluegrass festival. Could we
be hip?
Speaking of Burning Man, I was in Reno teaching a class last August, two
weeks before Burning Man. I heard all about it from the perspective of the
Nevada Department of Transportation, which is an interesting perspective,
despite the undeniable pride of such weirdness by conservative engineer
types like me who would never actually attend. One of our party expressed
interest, however, so I whipped out my iPhone and googled "Burning Man"
images, and the first picture that came up was a man without any covering
whatsoever other than fluorescent green paint. Thus ended the specific
interest of our colleague. Considering the conditions, I'm with Bob: I
wouldn't want to take the GMC. The dust is horrendous. And the horns
growing out the side just would not look right. Okay, there's a limit to
hipness.
So, Jim, congratulations on coming across as only slightly insane in a show
that existed only to demonstrate insanity. It can only do good things to
the GMC by giving it an air of hipness. The ladies driving it at the drag
strip shows people having fun in a GMC, doing goofy things and laughing
hysterically about it. You can't buy that image for any money. For my
generation, it wasn't needed, of course. All I need to say is "EM50 Urban
Assault Vehicle" and I have the instant attention and admiration of my
peers.

Would have been nice to see it, but my Cisco DVR screwed up the recording. Cisco Products really have begun to Suck.
Typical of a company when it becomes large and successful.
