If AZ DOT people are like the toll takers on bridges it is apparently against the law in Arizona to refuel a classic GMC motorhome using a regular gas pump. Stickers on every gas pump I have seen in Arizona say that vehicles must have less than 3 axles to use them. Here is a link to a photo of the sticker. I have looked at the quoted regulation and GMCs are not excepted.

Do gas pumps in other states say the same thing or is it only Arizona?

I lived in AZ a while back (my mom still lives there today) and I have
NEVER seen a sticker like that on any pump, anywhere in the parts of
AZ I have been too.

Armand,

I noticed that when I last filled up my coach at Safeway. I gassed it up anyway, and got away with it!

Thanks for the heads up, Ill keep an eye out next time I go. I do
think however the law is referring to trucks, not privately owned
motorhomes that have a tag axle or bogies like our GMCs do.

It sounds like something I would expect in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia, not Arizona.

Have you checked any truck stops like the RV island at Flying J or the truck side of a Pilot for the stickers?

I wonder what is behind that.

Don't read the sticker and go ahead and buy your gasoline. I'm sure if they enforced it we would have heard something by now.

I called the number. From the sound of it, it says press 1 to
report"Fuel Fraud" obviously referring to COMMERCIAL vehicles, not our
GMCs.

None of the 18 year old cashiers have noticed me filling up, they are to busy texting. JK
I've seen the sticker on pumps all over, but it applies to commercial vehicles.

The wording on the sticker is ambivalent.

Fuel can only go in vehicles with less than three axles AND less than 26,001
pounds (or exempt by law).

Then, don't dispense fuel from the pump into vehicle types of 3 or more
axles AND/OR declared GVW of more than 26,000.

I seems this is a terse restatement of a law. The full law probably goes
into more detail. The first statement is contradicted in the second by
having the AND/OR wording. I'm sure some attorney at law that works for the
great state of Arizona could explain it to someone's satisfaction.

At any rate, state that your GMC is owned by a non-profit and you're home
free. Aren't most of us non-profit individuals? I realize this doesn't apply
to Romney but I doubt that he owns a GMC motorhome. Nor Newt Gingrich, for
that matter.

ARS 28-5432 does spell out the vehicles and mentions commercial vehicles of
those designed to transport passengers of property in the furtherance of a
commercial enterprise. This would imply that Dan can't sell LEDs while in
Arizona and fill up at a typical gas station.

In Oregon you are not allowed to pump your own gas in to cans, two wheelers,
four wheelers or six wheelers.
Diesel is okay.

Read the very last line.
Therefore, cars could have four axles.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
For other uses, see Axle (disambiguation).
Not to be confused with Axl (disambiguation) or Axel (disambiguation).

Train wheels are affixed to a straight axle, such that both wheels rotate in unison. This is called a wheelset. An axle is a central shaft for a rotating wheel or gear. On wheeled vehicles, the axle may be fixed to the wheels, rotating with them, or fixed to its surroundings, with the wheels rotating around the axle. In the former case, bearings or bushings are provided at the mounting points where the axle is supported. In the latter case, a bearing or bushing sits inside the hole in the wheel to allow the wheel or gear to rotate around the axle. Sometimes, especially on bicycles, the latter type is referred to as a spindle.

On cars and trucks, several senses of the word "axle" co-occur in casual usage, referring to the shaft itself, its housing, or simply any transverse pair of wheels. The shaft itself rotates with the wheel, being either bolted or splined in fixed relation to it, and is called an "axle" or "axle shaft". However, it is equally true that the housing around it (typically a casting) is also called an "axle" (or "axle housing"). An even broader (somewhat figurative) sense of the word refers to every transverse pair of wheels, whether they are connected to each other or not. Thus even transverse pairs of wheels in an independent suspension are usually called "an axle".

I think that the gas pump stickers are to prevent large commercial vehicles from refueling using passenger car gasoline and they probably wouldn't enforce it on GMCs but you never know. If someone did turn a GMC in for violating it, it would be cheaper to pay the $1000 than to hire a lawyer to argue with the government. The law, best I can tell, does not specifically say 'commercial' vehicles and I can't even find the reference to the number of axles in the text.

I am really curious if other states have similar stickers and accidentally include GMCs as Arizona apparently has.

Please look at your gas pump stickers next time you fill up and see what they say - especially California.

Sounds to me like they're imposing higher road taxes on trucks (probably
defined by the 3-axles & weights).

In the unlikely event I was confronted, I would tell an officer that I checked and saw no axles under my GMC and that most cars I have checked only have one axle that goes across the back of the vehicle.  Most commercial big vehicles have three or more axles that are readily visible. However, if they claim my spindles are axles, (and definitions I checked suggest each spindle is an axle),  Most cars have two spindles on the front so they have 3 or four axles.  By some interpretations, only motorcycles would not be subject to the 3 axle provision. It appears to me the law was not intended for cars with 3 or four spindles, so it should not apply to vehicles 3 spindle axles but to large commercial vehicles.  The law could not be fairly applied unless the intent was for vehicles 3 or more axles that extend across the vehicle. Perhaps a careful reasing of the law or applicable regulations would be helpful - or painful.

Please do not tell the bay area toll guys I have 6 spindles so I should be charged for six axles.

this is when the fog gun comes back in handy, just shoot them with it. drive off in the fog.

ca. has a 10,000 pound weight registration fee that will give you a need for aspirin fast.
This seems to be a way to tax commercial vehicles at the pump for it and not in the dmv line. maybe

That looks like something these wacky AZ legislooters cooked up.  I not, not for profit is exempt as are under 26,000 pounds.  The GMC should be exempt on both bases.  Prolly a different tax structure for heavier vehicles.
