I bought two of the 6 volt golf cart batteries from sams club. 225 amp hour.

I thought I checked the voltage when I brought them home a month ago. and it seemed normal.

I just installed them into the coach, along with my linklite battery moniter/shunt.

I was shocked to see, that the battery monitor was showing 16.6 volts.

I checked the batteries, and each one is giving out 8.3 volts. so when I put them in series, I am truely getting 16.6 volts.

It is pretty cold out. 0 to 20 degrees the last couple days.

is this normal for the new batteries? seem pretty high.
what voltages would I normally see.

The batteries have not been hooked to a charger.

just going to let them sit there for a while. and keep an eye on that.

I would first doubt the the monitor and check with a volt meter.

If they are high - they will drop as soon as you use them and only charge back up to as high as the charging voltage given to them. In other words - you can't charge a battery up to 16 volts with a 14 volt source.

If I use ZDDP in a new car - will the tappets go flat?

Jon,

Something is radically wrong here....
Do the batteries have three caps or four??
Have you checked them with a reliable stand alone meter??
A 6V battery at 8 volts will be hotter than .... and boiling acid out of the vents.

You say they have not even been hooked to a charger.
If there really is no charge power and you are seeing this sort of voltage, then there is something going on that you don't know about.

Return them. They have 4 caps instead of 3, 8 volt batteries. OR, your meter is very wrong. I suspect the batteries are "wrong" though. I often catch myself looking at the 8 volt batteries at Sam's.

The last time I was at Sam's, they had both 6 VDC and 8 VDC batteries on
display. I'll bet you got the 8 VDC version. 3-cell batteries cannot put
out the voltages you're reporting.

DON'T NOT USE THEM! Golf cart batteries come in two sizes. 6 volt and 8 volt.

You have obviously gotten the wrong batteries.

Thanks. Yep. Wrong one's.

no where on it says anything about 8 volt. except the 8 on the part number.

Should of grabbed them off the shelf myself!
