So I had to replace both of my tires on the front of the GMC in
Bend, OR this morning. They were worn down to the wear marks. I had
these installed at an America's Tire in Texas. At that time I had 131k
miles on the coach. Now I have 150k miles. So that only gave me 19k
miles of use. I really like the ride with the steel tread and the
glass sidewalls, but was expecting a little more wear. Is anyone
getting better wear with their Commercial T/As??

Gary, did they wear evenly or was there some wierd wear pattern on them? I put new ones on the front every 2 years, rotating the fronts to forward rear. The oldest go onto the very rear. Works for me. Sometimes I leave fronts on for 4 years and replace the front rears, just depends. I can afford 2 tires every 2 years. If I had to buy 6, it would "hurt".

I get over 50.000 miles with them.
Maybe you have an alignment problem.

Hey Dan;

They wore evenly across the tread. These started out on the front
bogies. Last year I transferred them to the front and put new ones on
all 4 bogie tires. The rear appear to be fine at this point, but they
only have about 10k on them. I'll try the rotating thing and see if it
helps. If these don't work out, then I'll start looking for a
different manufacturer (but not Michelins). Thanks for the info.

On most coaches the mid position is the hardest on the tires. With the normal flex in the boogies they see the most scuffing in the turns... and that is if you boogie pins and arms are all "up to snuff!" The mid position is also the ones that normally get banged into curbs and other harsh treatment.

That is why is suggest that if you are picking up "two every two years" the tire be rotated from front to rear to mid then spares. I do not want a tire I banged into a curb to still be on the coach up to four years later! (With the damaged steel cords... rusting inside the casing of the tire.)

Granted, I haven't been able to follow my own advice as I have had to by 6 at each of my two tire purchases.

But I am putting away $12.50 a month for tires. "2 every 2" or "6 every 6"... I should have what I need when I need it. (If you need wheels and tires, put away $25 a month.)

Front tires wear the most.  You might do better with rotation.  Front tires wear faster depending on alignment, speed, driving style, winding roads, heavy breaking etc.  My coach only went 10K on the front tires the first time I checked.  Second set was equally fast wearing.  I have new tires now and a new alignment on a new front end - prior alignment was compromised by worn parts (tie rod end) that allowed tow in to be way off as soon as it left the alignment shop.  I will be happy if the new ones are half worn at 10K and I will rotate them at that time.

If you rotate tires that will much increase the miles available out of the average tire so you can expect much more between purchases.

Before I got married and considered maturity (near the birthday of my coach), I only got 11K out of front tires on my Olds Toronado. I drove way fast for long miles - often fast enough to float the valves. Over 120 mph with a car in tow at one time. I was young, single and drove in unpopulated desert areas in southern New Mexico. Speed / Torque applied to the front tires caused much of the wear.
