Hey Mates,
I just traded e-mails with a guy at Visual Impact Performance Systems and asked him if they were interested in supplying 'us' with a practical serpentine conversion kit and they indicated some interest in providing the Olds kits and is looking into the Caddy kit too.
I believe the right way to go here is stay functional; I don't care about the bling, so it can be anodized black for all I care, but there should be a consensus. What kind of considerations should there be?
I may move this to a separate thread - didn't want to leave you out, though.

If the prices on their web site are any indication of what they'll charge,
I doubt there will be many takers.

with a name like Visual impact performance, I doubt it will be function over form...
I'm predicting lots of fancy aluminum and other visually impactive features.
I'm already not interested.

1 BIG belt, easy to install/remove without prying/holding, etc like
multi-belt systems of our vintage. (Some systems have 2 belts)
Supposedly you get longer wearing belts that only need replacement at the 100,000 mile mark, and when that time comes one person can do it in minutes.
|
You forgot:
Only having one belt in spares, not three.
Not having to constantly tighten the alternator belt.
Being able to buy a belt if needed and not have to wait a day for a belt with the correct part number that won't work.
Not having to take off the fan blade and the A/C belt to replace the smoked alternator belt.
Being able to run a 130 Amp alternator at full load.
I bet I could think of more but it is late.
By the way, make sure that he comes up with the part number for a backward water pump.

Matt, to me it looks like the WP runs forward, not reverse. Belt runs across the top of the WP,,,,,,PL

Paul,
If you're looking at the March setup, it does run the WP forward -- but has
no provision for running an A/C compressor. That's why they didn't want to
talk to me when they first came out with it -- I kept asking the
embarrassing question about the WP.
Neither Leigh Harrison, Bobby Moore, JR Slaten, nor I was ever able to
figure out a way to run the WP forward with a single belt.

cannot go on when the ac freezes.
not designed for serp belt ( needs tensioners, n bearings)
not available for repair at any facility (all custom parts)
not oem for 30 years ;>)
cannot cut 2 of the 3 belts (and go on) when you have
- leaking ps pump
- bad ac clutch
- alternator smoking
A great system,(when the engine is designed for it

2. it lasts
3. it keeps everything spinning the right speed and direction
4. it uses an easy to find belt
5. Cheap.
6. Who gives a shit about what color it is. It will have dirt on it in a month.

I always felt that one reason most serpentine belt systems work so well is due to the inclusion of an automatic tensioner. I'm not so sure I would be all that excited about a system without one. One of the major reasons OEM's adopted the serpentine system was for noise reduction--partially due to the belt itself, but primarily due to the ability to solidly mount all the accessories to the block (to reduce harmonics).

Bob,
I agree that a serpentine belt works best with a tensioner, and would have
included them if I could have found locations on the slack sides of the
drive pulleys, but the spans are just too short. But aside from an
occasional short squeak when starting with a depleted battery, I've had no
sign of slippage on my 2-belt, no tensioner system.
I still won't even consider going back to V-belts.

Matt,
Are you trying to make me worry about my 100A CS-130D alternator being
mounted on a single 3"x3/8-16 Gr8 bolt screwed into the front of the R.
cylinder head of my Cad500?
(not really -- I do have a diagonal brace from a WP bolt to the forward end
of that bolt, but I'm not real happy with its configuration. But I drove
about 3000 miles with just the bolt.) :-(
