Unfortunantly I will not be able to make it to Shawnee OK this spring but I am planning on going to IA in the fall. I have never been to a GMCMHI convention before so I have a few questions. Is there some form of shuttle to town or is it in walking distance? What type of things are there to do? I will try to attend some of the conferences but would also like to do the tourist type things on some days. Will I need a toad? I have a Ford Festiva I can bring but would prefer not to. Any other information someone might care to share with a newbie would be appreciated.

Hi Mark

The campground is about 3/4 of a mile walk from the parts of town that you would like to visit. It is a small town but there is a lot there.
There is a furniture factory with a viewing area of the process, a water wheel driven woolen mill, a brewery, a quilting museum, other museums, many shops, toy store, clock store, old original butcher shop (with samples) book stores, bakery and some great restaurants.

You can usually catch a ride with other GMCers that are going to town. Especially in the evening when people want to go out to dinner. I usually have a toad with me and I give rides but I won't have it on this trip as I am pulling a trailer back from Michigan to Colorado with an antique player piano and some other antique furniture. So, Michelle and I will also be looking to get a ride. A lot of others happily give rides at the conventions. Its a great way to meet new people and make new friends. Some people bring their bicycles for local transportation as well. There is ample parking in town for those that want to drive their GMC in.

Don't miss breakfast at the Colony Inn. It is a home style serving. That is you can have as much as you want. Be sure to try the thin pancakes. Eggs, bacon, fried potatoes, sausage, fruit, juice, etc. Don't plan on much lunch that day though!

Mark, like Emery said, you really wont need a car, depending on just how far you want to venture out. We normally give folks rides but will likely have our 2 seater baja with us at Amana, and Shawnee. Can't tell it is behind the GMC except for seeing it in the rear monitor. I have also been known to take a 150 cc scooter that sits on the rear bumper, in case I want to venture out. Teri won't ride on it.
Look forward to seeing you there.

Bob and I have not been to Amanda Colonies, but are looking forward to it.
We WILL have our towd; however the most we can carry is five with three
squished in the back. That should work since it will be such a short
drive. Sandra

Amana is a good place to do the tourist thing without a towd. As Emery said, most things are within 3/4 mile. Actually, unless you are handicapped in some way, a bicycle for transportation around the camping grounds and for a ride into town might be the best way to go. We always bring our bikes and use them every day for transportation from camping spot to activities. Works great for us. JWID

Sounds like the bicycles are the way to go. Of course if I find the roll top desk I have been wanting then I might have to get a bigger basket for my bike.... Would it be a bit ecentric to have an oak roll top desk in a GMC? I think I have the coach reliable now so on to phase 2 which is to make it functional. Thanks for all the replies.

If I remember correctly, there was a parking lot in town that could even accommodate a GMC, otherwise a bike would be fine. It's a small town and really just down the road from the campground.

Hi John

We don't know how much time we will have yet. If our house in Santa Fe has sold by then we could stay longer and perhaps go to Midland to look up old friends.

Otherwise we would be at Gun Lake (Between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo just east of US131.
