But for those who've never changed a GM vehicle headlight switch, it can be
an all day job just figuring out how to remove the knob. Starting some
time before 1939, GM began using a knob with a long shaft that goes all the
way through the switch. That shaft is retained in the switch with a spring
loaded button on top (terminals side) of the switch. One MUST find that
button and push it, then pull the knob out ; the shaft will come with it.
Then the retaining nut for the switch will be revealed. From then it's
easy.
On reassembly, after tightening the retaining nut, just stick the shaft
back in its hole, twist it so its flat side engages the dash light dimming
rheostat's wiper, and push the knob to OFF. Done.

It's much easier to remove the old switch when you have a new switch in your hand to examine. Then the idea of that spring loaded button is easy to grasp. Pushing that spring loaded button lets you pull out the knob. Otherwise it's like a nasty Chinese puzzle. Once you get that figured out all it takes is arms like Gumby to bend around under the dash and about 10 minutes.

What! $50. Are you buying a gold plated one?
I just checked Rock Auto and you can buy a Standard one for just over $7.00.
You can buy an AC/Delco oner for $27.
Did you try to go to the counter of a local auto parts store? I am sure you can find one a lot cheaper than $50 with no shipping costs.

He's in New Brunswick Canada. Even more far out than Maine. That may be his best counter price. Those of us in the US and near large population centers have it so good we may not even realize it.
Hopefully he may be able to do better.

yep the best price over the counter at the local auto parts store. they have to bring it from their warehouse but no charge for the shipping. it would be cheaper to order one from rock auto with shipping.
NAPA was 5 bucks more expensive.
but I see where I have been checking the wrong fuse!!!
that little booger that you can't tell is burnt and is at the top on my fuse panel and beside a big "N" is blown! and if it was making contact the dash lights light!!!!!
Thank you Steve Jess
Just saved me 50 bucks!!
next time I see you I will buy you a beverage.

Once you replace everything that is attached to something else. It will all be fixed.
