Netters
I need help on this one as you will see if you continue to read.
Last winter I drove over a sheetrock screw somewhere in the south. I
stopped for gas and noticed that the rear(est) right tire was slightly low
on air. A careful examination revealed the screw.
The first tire company I went to in the town wasn't interested in repairing
a tire, they only wanted to sell me another..even if it wasn't the same
brand!
Another stop at a small independent tire location netted me a guy who would
put a plug in it for me without removing the wheel from the GMC.
That was what I chose to do...put in a plug!
A few days later in Maine at a tire dealership on the way home to pick up
tires for a friend of mine...the tire guy, quoted the state dogma and said
that ONLY a Mushroom patch was legal. I kept on going... when a guy states
the gospel without explanation, my eyes fog over and I exit.
Finally to the point!
What is the correct method to repair a sheetrock screw hole in a Michelin
16" tire..between the threads? Does anyone know for certain!
Mushroom patch, tire plug, or ?????
**I called Michelin and the guy didn't really know... I could check my
local tire professional (back to the starting point) or he offered to
Google it for me !! Thanks!
Thank you for your knowledge and or opinion.

i own a bus company and have 9 vans, my friend has a used tire shop and to plug it while on will get you home.
putting a larger stainless screw with some gook on it will actually many times get you home with a bike pump. This
is of course BS but it works, I have gone 200 miles on one of these. never take the screw out if deep, turn out a little
gook it and put it back if it leaks, if it does not leak while in, leave it till you get home.
If you have the plug - it most likely will fail sooner than later,
You do not have to buy a new tire in my mind i have had a patch sanded and glued on the inside of the tire after
trimming the plug from the inside but leaving it in the hole, this last as long as the tire. I have done this many times
with out any problem. this is also my first post - i hope it helps the science of air in tire. mickey
palm beach new owner needs airbags, what ones would you use and get. i am stumped for now.
Jim states he has some coming in soon i trust he is the one to trust, everyone else does. thank you really like this GMC stuff.

Ideally you would take the tire off and patch it from the inside. However, I
carry a Blackjack kit http://tinyurl.com/7ehs8rf . I've repaired tires on
the coach and cars with this kit and saved hundreds of dollars and side of
the road aggravation with the kit. Personally I have not issues with a plug
and confidently travel at hwy speeds after installing the plug. I;ve looked
at plugs from the inside when I have changed tires and they look really
solid. If its a screw or nail you have picked up a plug works just fine in
my opinion. It's when you tear a sidewall that the plug does not work. Don;t
confuse the Blackjack kit with something off the rack at NAPA. These kits
include heavy duty tools and plugs. You need a little muscle to install them
but for an easy repair you can't beat it. I have a schrader valve on the
rear suspension that I can connect an air hose to fill up the tire after the
repair.
Thanks

Mike,
I'm no tire expert, but have sat through a disturbing number of meetings on tire repairs when my former employer wanted to lead the industry on tire inflator kits instead of spare tires. Along with lots of service people, there was a Michelin rep at a couple of meetings. The conventional wisdom is that a plug from the outside isn't considered a safe long term repair. The concern is that it doesn't do as good a job of sealing as a "mushroom" patch from the inside, so the plug can hold moisture against the steel belts, cause rust, which makes the steel expand and leads to a long term failure. I think somewhere on Michelins website they tell you not to use plugs from the outside as a long term repair.

Mickey,
It's great to see you here - and with your fleet experience you'll be a good addition to the list. One suggestion that I find very helpful when reading someone's post is to include a signature that includes your name year of the coach and your location. If you use the forum then you can set up an automatic signature - if you use email, well, then it's up to you.
Welcome to the group - but I don't think it's official 'till the Waterman's blessing is given!

We deal with that virtually a thousand times a day. Use an inside patch to provide a consistant and long lasting fix.

Mickey,
Welcome to the group, family, cult, asylum....
I were needing new airbags and not interest in going the quad-bag route, I would contact sgltrac and find out how to buy as set of adapters and the Firestone airbags that go with those. Look those up under sullybilt or Markbags.
That may be what Jim has coming in. If you get it from JimK, it will be the correct parts, and he stands behind what he sells.
I am the waterman spoken of earlier and there is really nothing official about this at all, but very early in my GMC life I discovered that these coaches are not just something you own like so many other toys and vehicles. They get to be much more a part of your life than that. Being a waterman, I liken it to the relationship that we have with our boats. So, I decided some time ago to welcome new owners with a greeting similar to that we (watermen) use to welcome a new owner or boat. So,
May the Good Lord bless this coach and all those that setforth within her.
Welcome Mickey

thank you god is right next to me and i will let him know. humble kind gesture that i am not worthy of, i owe you a prayer for your kindness.
If you knew duane here in anaheim i called him and talked with him went by his house and he was not there, and talked with him
on the phone was looking forward to his integrity and kindness with mr. onan etc. Then he passed on before i could see him, he was
open hearted to participate in the archiving of another gmc. They are much like a boat that becomes a part of you that is an extension
of your efforts and i look forward in working on it more, miguel in monte clair has it now, he has put in a booster brake sensitive kind etc.
a steering sleeve at the bottom, sealed the sun damaged windows, replaced the right front window passenger side. He let the battery go
down i always undo the positive wire and the battery last months, but it has set and gone down. He is very busy although that hurts. But
i have great confidence in him and his integrity for he has added to what he has done to tell me what it needs. So i trust him.
I am working so hard i do not have time to work on it myself right now. I have a friend that has a ranch but am afraid of rodents
i have an idea for at reverse top for the gmc that you drive onto and then pull up to stop the mice and stuff getting into it.
Do you have any idea to stop mice .l.... anyway when i work it is fun to look everyonce in a while over and see all of you talking about
the design science of the greatest boat on land the GMC space ship. mickey :-)

Just sayin - this is weird. A guy in Anaheim - named Mickey - who's afraid of mice....
But seriously -
There has been a lot of talk about ways to repel rodents (and insects too!) I think the most practical method is to get a cat. Aside from that your idea of driving onto an upside-down RV cover and pulling it up over the top sounds like a good idea to me. At the very least you can see if those rotten critters have chewed through the cover.
Others have put rope-lights under the coach, as some critters don't like the light. Some have sprinkled paprika or pepper around to dissuade the beggars. Traps and poison aren't really optimal - particularly the poison - as it invariably leaves you with a stinking dead rodent inside the coach.

I have plugged more tire in my life than i want to admit to. I can only one that later leaked but....
I getting lazy these days and for a flat fee of $10.00 Walmart will remove the wheel, remove the tire, fix the tire with a combination plug/patch, reinstall the tire, balance it, and re-install it on the vehicle. For $10.00 it is not worth my effort to do it myself.

The last time I had a flat, I went to Discount Tire (where I'd never
shopped before). They did all those steps for me, even saving the
Counteract, and charged $0.00!
First chanct I git, I'm gonna buy somethin' from 'em (but the closest one
is 75 miles away).

thank you i think that this is a great design to have a very thick say 3 feet high with wood tire spots to drive onto and lifted with
bunggy cords to the sides will stop the critters, i think this is a million dollars design and i will split the idea with anyone that
wants to do it with me. It is needed for all vehicles in storage. it can be plastic cheap as well, thick but think enough to stop a chip monk, rat
mouse, spider etc. go through with chemical add to the ground level. It is one of the best inventions i have ask a cover company here in irvine and
they are thinking about it. I have no rights except emails to prove it is my idea. but what the heck anyone can have the idea and do it, but give me
one or let me buy one from you if you do it. mickey

Aside from that your idea of driving onto an upside-down RV cover and pulling it up over the top sounds like a good idea to me. At the very least you can see if those rotten critters have chewed through the cover.

Discount Tire has always been great for me - for many different

Be patient, Ken. Discount Tire is constantly
opening up new stores in new areas.
I have one about 4 miles to the west and one
is about to open about 4 miles to my north!
Discount Tires is where I bought new shoes
for Money Pit down in New Braunfels, TX
before driving it home to OKC. I have since
used them for tires for my two pickups.
That's 12 tires in the past two years.
Their prices and service make it worth going
some extra distance!
They also are suppliers for the Rock Star
alloy wheels that Shan Rose put on his GMC.
I am sorely tempted to do likewise, but that
will have to wait before higher priority stuff
gets done to Money Pit.
