Sounds like a fair deal. Similar prices were available around here, before Christmas. Nice thing about the GPS puck, it's a complete GPS system and puts out the NEMA data stream. It can be used for other things, than with the Microsoft street software.
Hams, think APRS.
Only real disadvantage with using this as your main GPS, unless you have purchased a laptop with a daylight visible screen, you cannot read the screen and follow the road map in most daylight conditions. I have one friend (GMC owner) who has a cardboard box, that He sets his laptop inside to see the screen. Motion Computing made laptops with daylight visible screens, but they were bought out by HP. I do not know the status of the screens. I did see a replacement screen for the netbooks that used a similar type of display as the eReader, (eInk?) but the cost of the screen (not installed) was as much as a typical netbook.
Even the purpose built GPS do not have very good daylight readable screens.

video shops have a hood for editing video in the out doors. The company is called hoodman. It fits over the screen big time. but to big for next to driver
unless you need to use the lap top etc. etc.

We use an ipad for daytime GPS. Easy to read.

Google Maps are free but no voice directions.

Just a note on the Apple iPad family. If you do not purchase the 3G version, you do not get a internal GPS in the iPad. The 3G and GPS are co-located in the same chip. This chip is not present in the WiFi only models.
Wish I had known that when I bought mine.

I not a fan of MS either, but there are many, many GMCr's and FMCA members that use Streets. I like their opion more than "reviewer"s.

To also answer the original question;
No, that is not a good price.

While I have some reasons that I think are very valid for not using Macrosquash as a first choice supplier, some people really like S&T. It is a functional navigator, but I find that there are features it either lacks or are much more difficult to use than the similar function of Street Atlas.

Navigation really has two distinct and essential components. First is knowing where you are. (This can be tough on deep water, but not so tough on pavement.)
Second is determining what you need to do to get where ever it is that you want to end up. All of the GPS stuff in the world cannot compete with common sense. You will be required to think (not a big issue in this crowd, but elsewhere it can be) and review what the little box wants you to do. Sometimes all these machines think of some really stupid ideas.

If you really want to know more, the is a great website <url:http://www.laptopgpsworld.com/> and if you go there you can get a whole lot of information about all of the laptop mapping/planning/navigating packages.

If you really want to know about these two packages, find friends with them and borrow both (or maybe others, there are others - CoPilot is liked by owners of monster SOBs because it has algorithms to chart routes for large vehicles.)

I started with S&T in the DOS 6 times, and when I got Delorme Street Atlas because it was a special deal, I liked it just a little better. I ran what ever I had at the time and I used both road and marine programs to some advantage. They all worked, they all had map package issues, but long about my change from Win95 to Win98, S&T got fussy about the GPS input and would only accept their receiver on a serial port. This was a problem, I didn't have a serial port anymore and when I used an adapter to USB, S&T frequently read it as a mouse.....
I complained and got the usual level of support I have come to expect from Redmond. When the only answer you keep getting is to purchase the new version at full price, that gets a little old. One version would only accept input from their own GPS receiver, but SA has a list to choose from and setup choices for those. In the early days, I was using a Garmin GPS as a serial NMEA input to SA and it was happy with that and didn't mind when I had to include a USB adapter for the new Win98 machine (as long as I got the setup correct).

I still regularly load the freebee S&T 60day tryout with most new versions when available, but I have not found reason to keep it recently.

I have run CoPilot 2000 and CoPilot LapTop 8...

My short version is I liked the GPS program. The CoPilot 2000 was from the original company that created it. It was a simple install and run program. I especially liked the big laptop screen so I could see where I was going, the voice yelling at me when I missed a turn was unique as well.

CoPilot LapTop 8 came out after a company change to ALK. So did some of the securities.
I really like the program, I still have it.

I had an issue with my MS 2000 and my web connections. I had to reinstall the MS 2000 and I found the CoPilot LapTop 8 needed to be activated from ALK. They promptly told me that LapTop 8 was no longer supported, and though I did find a tech that said he would try to help, he didn't try very hard. I finally got the activation code and all was well but I did tell them that if they can't support a product that good money is paid for, then perhaps consideration of different GPS companies would be a the way to go. There was no comment from the tech.

I like the operation of the CoPilot series of programs and I still have mine but I was a bit niffed that they did not want to even offer the activation code for my program CoPilot LapTop 8.

That said, I would recommend getting whatever their newest version is if you want a laptop screen GPS that is accurate and talks to you, and you can talk back. Just be aware that there will be a time when they will tell you to buy a new program rather than offer support.

Does the version you have support voice?

Can you ask it question along the lines of SIRI on the
new iphone?

Do other mapping/GPS programs support this?

Thanks!

C'mon, how much smarts do you think you can buy in a GPS

Do other mapping/GPS programs support this?

Only ALK's maps. Actually, now not even theirs. They want users to buy a new program. That's why I told them their support wasn't very good and not as much bang for the buck that I'd like.

Richard,
The 2010 version of SA responds to about 50 questions and commands (including Shudup). I suggest that you route the audio to a Bluetooth headset with good noise immunity for best results.
While it does not even try to answer question not relevant to the task at hand. It is pretty good at telling you what is important, but it will never replace a human navigator.
I believe that ALK (CoPilot) has some voice features, but I do not recall how good they are.
If you want to know more about laptop GPS programs, then go to url<http://www.laptopgpsworld.com/> and read about all of them.

Matt
