The required stages will vary with the current condition of your finish. If your existing finish is original and stable(not delaminating or cracking) it should only require thorough cleaning and sanding for adhesion. If your coach has been re painted in its life, such as mine had, there can be many more variables to deal with. A deteriorated second or third paint job becomes an archaeological dig of sorts as old repairs under a dull/peeling second finish are sometimes discovered during the paint prep process as the failed finish masks some old repairs.
Most metallic finishes are two stage or base coat/clear coat finishes. The reasons for this are metallic control and spot repairability. When the clear coat is integrated with the base coat, uniform color needs to be achieved simultaneously with desired gloss and texture. With two stage systems the base coat or color coat is sprayed first allowing the painter to focus on color coverage and consistency in one step then gloss and texture separately. Spot repair or partial refinishing is much more cumbersome with single stage finishes for the same reasons.

I selected imron single stage for my roof for a couple of reasons:
I had to paint it by leaning over it from ladders and the more times you hang over a wet paint film the more likely you are to impart debris in the finish.
I have used imron a few times in the past and was impressed with its tenacity and durability. Some of the overspray mist is still stuck to the keypad of my crackberry which was a good distance away from the coach during the roof painting and covered with oils from my skin.

Hello Sully,

Perhaps you could go into a little detail of how you redid your roof ??, sanding, undercoat etc etc ??

Are you saying the Imron you used had a built in clearcoat ??
CLEVER little devils !!!!

I do not have a bag of $$ laying around, and i have some places that need repair and a repaint, to make them look satisfactory.
Having never painted bodywork before i need some sort of starting point, and the stages that are needed.

cheers and beers.
