The change in belt molding design was early 1976, if I recall 6V100878. Here are links, first one is 1st series design:

Notice the corrosion at the interface of the top of the stainless strip & alunimum body in the first design. The second design minimized the corrosion problem as well as being a cheaper replacement.
Other information you can gether from these pictures are,
first picture is of a 1975 or early 1976. Second photo is of a 1977. The second design minimized the corrosion problem as well as being a cost reduction replacement.
As to eliminating the strip, cracking of the filling and painting often occurs. I almost bought an original low mileage early 1975 Carlings Brewery Transmode. The original paint was untouched with removed bump strip and no cracks from being done in 1975. Don't know who the original upfitter was but they did a great job.
Also have a friend who is a stainless nut. Has a stainless grill (original design) and replaced all original 1976 PB horizontal body stripes with polished SS.
