Hi,
My name is Norm and I have been a '76 GMC Glenbrook owner since 1997. My coach has been off the road for several years because of my wife's illness, but she passed away last August. I am hoping to get the GMC back on the road sometime this year- my list is long. I was an active member of this list from 1998 to about Jan 2001 and archived the digests for reference. I belong to GMCMI, FMCA and the GMC Tidewater Crabs and was a past member of the Dixielanders.
Having re-joined the GMClist I have noticed at least 2 folks with Ham licenses. I got my General license in September and would love to communicate with other Hams who also own GMC motorhomes. I plan to have some kind of radio(s) the GMC when I get on the road again.
Anyway, I love my GMC and look forward to seeing some of you in the future at various rallys.

I am sorry for your loss. My wife passed away 3 years ago so I know what you are going through. The GMC will be a good diversion. We are glad you are here and look forward to seeing you on the road again.

Welcome back! So sorry to hear about your loss. Enjoy your GMC. It will be good therapy. I am not a Ham, but I can think of at least half a dozen on here who are. You are in good company.

Norm, There are about 100 Hams also infected with GMC itch. Ken b. has a compiled list. Maybe He can chime in here.
I have a Icom V8000 ( high power 2 mtr) feeding a 5/8 wave antenna, mounted on my mirror. I monitor 146.52 while in the coach. Many qso's if you look for them. I will install my ft-856d, when I return south and chase hurricanes. Feed the radio off the house battery, using powerpoles, and isolated fuses on separate power line. For HF, I will use the ATAS-120 matched to the 857D.
We, the GMC Ham community should do a "special event", in conjunction with GMI International Rally. Special QSL card, anyone?

Special event would be interesting. I just have old tube stuff - no wait,
I do have one of those solid state radios made in Japan. ICOM 736. But
the tube station will keep you warm in the winter - who needs heat when you
have those warm blue lights coming out of the radio. At least the tube
stuff is from the same era as the GMCs.

Tom, that K2 is one of the better radios ever built. We ran them as KWM-2As in God's Great Air Farce for many many years... finally had to get away from them because the bandswitches began to die, and there weren't any suitable replacements.

Yes, I love the K2 - it's not a mil spec - but on a scale of 1-10 - it's
about an 11! But that's my opinion. The Drake is no slouch either - like
I said, they give off about as much heat as the furnace in the GMC.

PM me if there is real interest in a special event station at International Rally. We need to act very soon (yesterday?) to get it into QST. Involve setting up a station (inside GMC?) and manning it for daylight hours. Cost would be special QSL card (featuring a GMC) and postage. Any reply QSL's could be posted at Amana, in the Fall. I have a deploy-able HF station and vertical antenna.
Not a VE, but any interest for non-Hams, maybe we could get a VE session (Tech level training and testing). PM on this also.

Actually, Collins Dallas was a mil spec line, at least when Rockwell had it. I thought Cedar Rapids was as well. The AF had the radios because LeMay made them buy them - becuase they worked - and he needed decent C&C.
The GMC is actually big enough to put a vehicle mount and powersuopply and a K2 in, and have it fit.

They became a real b!tch to keep running though,
partially because there were so many manufacturing
changes through their lifespan and also because so

I do not know the ins and outs of doing that. Are you proposing to renew your Gxxx license and then getting a W, N, or K call. I'm not sure how one does that.
You could also operate as a G3/W4
If that does not work, then just take the US tests. They have been dumbed down a whole lot and are not difficult these days. I think you get 50% credit for spelling your name correctly.
If you decide to go that route, I'll send you the question pool.

Mac,
Please find out what it would take to schedule a special session at the rally site. Probably on a weekend. I know there is an advertising requirement and it must be open the public.
Here is what I'm thinking..
How about a one or two hour training session with a hand out of the question pool for Tech? Then a day to two later follow with a formal VE session.
Do you have Extras in your the VE pool? If so we could also offer upgrades to anyone interested. I think we need t at least offer Tech and General
The primary target should be new Techs with the upgrades only available on the side.
If this can be figured out with local VEs, then I'll gladly contact Kim and ask her if we could do this at Shawnee.
