An interesting observation about solar panels. They are in production all over the world and prices are coming down rapidly----so is quality in some cases. Most new technology items go through a cycle that they are not used at all until they are within 10x the price/performance of the competing technology they are trying to replace. Once under than "magic" threshold then many players get into the game and try to chase down the price/performance curve faster than the next guy. That is where we are with solar panels right now. The last thing you want to do is buy based on price per watt. There are just too many ways to game the price per watt number. You have to consider all the relevant performance specs and even then you need to be really knowledgeable to keep from being flim-flamed by the marketing hype. Watch Quartzite this year. My guess is you will see a flood of cheap sounding solar panels and LED lights. Buyer beware. Best bet is to buy from well know name su
ppliers who have been around a long time, who are likely to be around a long time from now and who offer reasonable performance warrantees. Absent that, you are the beta tester for a lot of this stuff. I love new tech as much as anyone and I have no trouble living on the bleeding edge, but I know that is where I am so am comfortable there...........

Jerry,
I am fortunate enough to have come across some DOD (Department of Defense)
surplus solar panels. Probably too small for serious power, but I use them
to charge an RV/Marine battery and power several LEDs that light a small
shop extremely well. The LEDs I use are only available in large quantities
- but are very, very bright and are marketed only commercially by Osram
Lamp, GE Commercial, Sylvania Commercial, and a few others. Jobber cost is
around $30 per running foot. Three 8" sections provide a whiter brighter
light then two 8' flourescent shop lamps. All come with at least a 10 year
warranty. A couple have lifetime warranty.
You're right, you get what you pay for.
To re-lamp a 26' coach would cost approximately $500-600. Much less if you
use the scraps from production. That cost includes adding lights at all
service and storage doors and cabinets. Energy consumption is 75-80% less
then the existing incandescent lamps.

Many products are made by one company and re-marketed by another. Since I'm not concerned at all about brand name, and the quality of the panels exceeds what I hoped for I did get what I paid for! Being in the electronics business I know of at least (5) brands made by the same factory in Malaysia , same production run, same performance, maybe one feature switched from one to the other however to fool the consumer. Out of the five brand names, only one is known by most, the other four are fairly unknown.

Where do you live? I may be able to find a local distributor for you. The
company I work with does commercial and specialty electric sign work. I
know they have a minimum order of around $3,000 direct from the
manufacturer/supplier. You may be able to purchase small quantities by
dealing local.

If you want to experiment with LEDs, you can buy super bright LEDs from DigiKey.
They have the Cree MX6AWT-A1-R250-0009E8, warm white, LED in stock at $2.73/each. Or $2.52 for 50.
I bought these for my coach using 3 in series with an 18 ohm 3 watt resistor, they are plenty bright. They drop 3.3V each. So 3 in series drops 9.9 volts. The 18 ohm keeps the current under 250 milliamps. You have to solder them to a circuit board.
The light output is a very bright yellow-white, 2700K.
They are not a harsh blue/white color like the inexpensive flashlights at Harbor Tool.
