Roy,
You're exactly right. There are variables everywhere that aren't covered by the simplified temperature vs. life estimate. First, what is "life" anyway? Oil will degrade gradually and there is no "failure" point. And there are a number of factors involved - time, miles, shear rate, atmosphere, humidity, etc. Normal automotive transmissions run at temperatures over 220 for a lot of their life - and temperatures below 200 might even be detrimental. So it's not a simple thing. And Synthetic oil will tolerate high temperatures better than others. The bottom line is still that when the temperature approaches 300 there is cause for concern. In my opinion, an operating temperature between 200 and 240 is just fine. Temperatures below 200 might not hurt the oil, but they will certainly cause more viscous drag and therefore reduce fuel economy.

Isn't there some kind of a time frame that goes with these temperatures? I would think half an hour at 220 degrees would be a lot different then 30 seconds at 230 degrees then down to 150 degrees operating temperature.

Good Morning
In response to requests, we are sharing our Luncheon dates for 2012. Should

Tulsa, 11:30 AM until whatever..

I also use Mobil 1 and have used it for some time, around 260 is the hottest trans temp that I have seen but that is for a very short time as soon as I top the Mt. it drops rapidly along with the engine oil temperature on the down grade.
