The EZpass which is used in several eastern states becomes a bargain tomorrow in PA. Cash paying drivers will pay 17% more to drive on the PA Turnpike beginning tomorrow, JAN 1, 2012. Some kind of savings are found in almost all the states which accept EZpass.

Bob,
I got my EZ pass (fastlane) through the state of Massachusetts at:

http://www.massdot.state.ma.us/highway/traffictravelresources/fastlaneprogram.aspx

There are no fees with the Mass Fastlane pass unlike Ohio which wanted to charge me a fee. The passes are good on all the same roads so that isn't a problem using the Mass pass. You might want to check with other states to see if their passes are fee free.

I have read about the new pass for NC; it is not compatible with EZPass. Reading the details, NC can cancel the pass if it is not used, so be careful buying from another state where you never actually travel.

Hardie,
Always a good idea to read the fine print. We have have had the Mass pass for over two years and have used it in most of the states allowed except Mass with out any problem. Because we have one pass set for the GMC with a toad (5 axles)we have the commercal account. All this means is our balance is $50 instead of $20.

The EZpass in PA is either non-commercial or commercial. The difference is the commercial costs five dollars a month as a service fee. and you must keep a higher balance in the account. There is no service fee for the non-commercial. On the down side, the commercial is based on weight not whether you are using the vehical commecially. The upside is that if you use a vehicle, such as a large motorhome, only occasionally, you can use your non-commercial account. Florida's Sun Pass is also non compatible with the EZpass. But, Ohio and Indiana are. I used mine around Chicago and saved a bundle.

You did NOT "save" anything. You just didn't get raped in the manual cash lane.

Yes I paid less which I referred to as saved, but even more important I was able to move quickly through the express lanes
and was not held up (?) in the long lines at the toll booths. And lastly, being in the wrong lanes in a motor home and trying to change brings out the worse in Chicago drivers as they refuse to let you move over !!! Sorry folks it's true.

Yep the fast pass lane is worth the lower toll. I haven't driven the GMC in Chicago traffic, and plan to keep it that way however possible.

As far as lane changes in Chitown I think the best vehicle to use for that is one of those hardened vehicles shown on Storm Chasers. Although a long time ago I had a '73 Plymouth Duster with bad paint and a few "wrinkles". Never had a problem changing lanes in Chicago with that. I suspect the other drivers figured I had nothing to loose, and it appeared I may have already "won" the lane change battles.

I read something not too long ago about the FastPass ( Chicago ) tollway. If you recall, Chicago raised the manual lanes by double a couple of years ago. I don't think that should be legal but I also do not see anyone trying to fight it.

The recent changes, If I recall, is they are doubleing both FastPass charges and the already high Manual charges.

I don't see where anyone is getting a deal on the toll way anymore.

Luckily, I usually travel late through Chicago and avoid the Tollway like the plague. The toll way has never had a good history of using money conservatively and waste, greed and theft has been mentioned. Some have gone to prison because of this.

I don't know if Fast Pass can be used anywhere else or not, I'll have to try to look it up...

I've used the I-Pass in other states, mostly on trips to VA.

Here is a quote from the Ill Tollway website:

"I-PASS is a prepaid toll collection system that saves motorists time and money. Every toll lane on the Illinois Tollway is equipped to accept I-PASS, which can also be used on the Chicago Skyway, the Indiana Toll Road, and in 14 states and more than 20 toll roads where E-ZPass is accepted."
