Well, in an act of self-flagellation and pure torture, I hereby jump back into the fray. I have purchased another GMC.

And so it begins again. Gone are the restful nights and the fattened bank account when I was "coachless." Gone is the good feeling that only comes from driving a vehicle manufactured in this century. I had it so good, but fortune is fleeting.

So why do this? Why not choose to jab out my eyeballs with a hot poker or remove my fingernails with a pair of side cutters? That would ultimately be less painful and, quite possibly, more productive in the long run. Why not just gather up a pile of $1000 bills to be set ablaze? Why not take that same pile of money and see if I can find someone who’ll sell me some Enron stock?

Well, to tell the truth, I sort of missed the misery and pain that only comes with owning a GMC. I sold “White Trash” my ’78 Royale in a sort of kneejerk reaction to sudden unemployment. There was no particular reason to sell. I liked "White Trash" in a way that one becomes accustomed to a stray cat. That sale provided some financial relief, but left an irrational longing in my heart. Thus the search began again.

I won’t blame this one on Ken Henderson, but when he heard of a ’76 Eleganza that needed a new home he just couldn't resist telling me.

Oh well then, let’s blame it on Ken.

I had really wanted a rear bath Royale. That is not what I got, but in its defense, it was located only 90 miles from home. That counts for something. Right? At least I'm reasonably sure I can afford the gasoline to get it home. Leave it to me to buy a 35 year old coach based solely on it's proximity to Americus, Georgia.

It is not a Royale... hell, it is not even an Eleganza, but a well-disguised Palm Beach. I'm told by Dave Greenberg, who keeps up with such things, that she once belonged to a gentleman from South Florida by the name of Frank Weiss.

I found out also that it was at one time known as the “Spirit of ‘76”. Thankfully, that lettering is long painted over. I’m not exactly sure what I’ll call her. Something about “Blue Trash” doesn't exactly ring true. Maybe, "Am I Blue?" I'm seriously thinking about calling her "Blue Collar." A step up from "White Trash."

I’ll pick her up sometime after the first of the year. She’ll have new tires and a new windshield. She has decent paint and even if I can’t afford gasoline, she’ll look real good in the back yard.

I'm thinking about planting some petunias on the roof.
