Due to the fact my traiter project is to be designed as a Race trailer, I have to have the rear open.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQL-tNbD6IY&feature=youtu.be
I do like this option and have studied it over and over
But I think I want to split it with the top lifting as it will be light because the window will be filled in, I am working on air rams to actuate it, But also have the bottom have to drop, I do like the way this one works (Im sure you will all reconize the video) I do feel if I extend the back down and have pivot at a lower level (Redo the rear frame) I will not have as much a an angle to deal with as well a flat floor right to the rear, Just thinking this all out,
Any thoughts even some suggestions on methods?

Notice in that clip the rear bumper and spare tire moved with the door rather than being fixed to the frame.

Jay,
Randy Johnson has built a 23' GMC with an opening rear door to transport his Mini's inside. Here's some pictures:

JimB down at the Coop was building a 23' GMC for a band that had an opening rear door similar to the one pictured above.

During my years with GM I got involved with some of the outfits that created the vehicle props for these movies and they are nothing short of amazing. i always felt that it was like playing and being paid for it!

I think I will build without the fire power, Not much need for that up in Canada, Well could be handy to clear traffic,
Very interested in powered actuaters though, To run a split back door,
Split half way down with the bottom dropping with a lower hinge point at the bottom of a flat frame as opposed the stock rear frame that heads upwards, If it drop from the lowest spot will it decrease the angle and allow a flat floor all the way to the back wall, With horizontal actuaters laying flat on each side as well two more to lift the upper door, In my head it seems easy to design and build, So we will see, Start this one in Febuary after the unit is closed in and towable.

Jay,
The rear door system will need a frame structure just inside the rear panel to stabilize the body and mount the door actuators.
Does anyone know of pic of such frame structures?
A garage door spring and cable may be a (KISS) way for the ramp (lower door) to operate.

According to GMC Engineers, the original one off GMC trailer had the bumper rotate with the rear door/ramp. Was also told the rear bumper was stainless, not chrome plated, why....they didn't know.

Right hand drive to boot. Woo Hoo!
The current iteration is significantly bigger, and a lot more refined, but just as much fun (and is reliable transportation).
Eldest daughter has put 70,000 miles on hers (the one she kinda suckered dear old Dad out of... in a very good way).

He had a vehicle made in Australia at GMCMI in Texas in spring of 2010
and
again at DuQuoin that fall. This fall at Goshen he was packing
something
else. I believe he also switched from a 23 to a 26 Eleganza.

If it is the red car reversing from the rear of the GMC it is a morris mini
woody wagon (also could be badged as an Austin in some countries)
Definately not a mini moke. mini moke has no doors and generally a canvas
roof and resembles a small army jeep.

[GMCnet] Johnson's Moke [message #154274 is a reply to message #154247] |
Sat, 24 December 2011 14:34 |
|
Dumb US citizen here -- the vehicle of which I was speaking can be found
on the GMCMH photo site.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=32727
If that isn't a Moke then I'll eat the car. Dan Gregg snapped this photo.
I have four others of it backing out of the 26-foot GMC at the Montgomery
convention in the spring of 2010.
As I stated in an earlier email in another thread that has been hijacked,
it was also present at DuQuoin unless my memory is all screwed up.
Rob correctly identified the vehicle probably because he, like and others,
have seen it face-to-face.
