Since I found out my Onan battery in my 73 was tied into the 12v buss I just disconnected it so it is wired normally. Now my Onan charges the battery and the alt doesn't. I understand that is how is was designed in the 73. However I did wire a very small (but really nicely constructed) 12v solar panel to the door panel of my outside electrical wiring door. I thought it would help since I sometimes forget to start my Onan up, and hope to keep the charge a little topped off. Anyone else do that? It will never be optimized for the perfect charge, but in AZ I thought it would be better then nothing.

I haven't been following this thread but if it hasn't been suggested before, I strongly suggest rather than disconnect it from the house battery, that you instead connect the two together with a combiner.
I seldom use the generator and so the on-board alternator probably will not keep it charged. Also with it disconnected you have eliminated any path to allow boost starting of the Onan with the house batteries.
Will a solar panel keep the Onana battery charged? That depends on the size of the panel and the amount of sunlight it sees.
