Bought this unit on 11-28. It arrived today. That is some sorry shipping and I told them.
Anyway, it came with drivers for Windows 7 and that is one reason I ordered it. Works great. Make sure you set the power output to 100%. Mine came set at 1%.
Enjoy the cheap toy.

Dan,
I got mine yesterday -- and now my dumb question, I thought this attached to the wireless router and boosted the signal.. But, does it attach to the laptop and boost the reception?
I rarely ever move my laptop.
I wanted something to boost the signal so my ipad would work better downstairs...

Sorry Dennis,
This device does not do that. It does attach to a computer with a USB port and take over the 802.11 traffic.
There are WiFi repeaters, but none (that I know of) attach to the WAP (Wireless Access Point - router). You can get high powered WAP. I have installed them, but it was a while ago and the numbers I knew are no good now.
Save the Alfa, when you are on the road it is a lifesaver. There have been a few times that we hauled up for the night, I found wire and read the day's mail and didn't find the source until morning.

Dennis, what you need is the Pepwave repeater. Works good. Got mine from the 3gstore.com for 69 bux. It will boost your router signal all you want and the ipad will see it anywhere on your property.

Matt and Dan,
Thanks for your help.
I will install this on my laptop -- and test it shortly to determine the range. Matt, yes, as you describe it's capability it should be an advantage when traveling and using public networks.

Got mine on Wednesday. Agreed on the lax shipping. Haven't tested it as yet.

Got my Alfa on Friday.
Hooked it up to my laptop and went for a walk.
By the time I got to the garage,(100 ft from house) the internal unit was down to 1 bar, the Alfa was still at 5. Plus two others in the neighborhood were at 3+ compared to nada from the laptop.
Should be worth the 20bux (after shipping).

Mitch,
Just wait... You will be amazed at what that thing can do.
If I did not own two, I would have gotten another.
I paid near 50$us for my first Alfa. When my son made off with that, I bought the another for only a little less.
Even though I can tether the 3G Googlephone, I will never be without it when traveling.

Thanks for this. I need to beef up my router signal at home too, this
will help nicely.

Just something about looking for free internet I guess. Have a Pepwave repeater running here now hooked onto a router down the street. Spent 70 bux on it. It is a slick little unit.

But, that's not the only repeater/range extender around. I use a little
Belkin that I paid <$30 for to reach my workshop 75 yards from the house
through a couple of brick walls. I still have to use an Alfa at the shop
so I can extend the antenna outside the metal building.
Some good info here: http://www.wifirepeaterreviews.com/
