Well the surgery is over and it went well. Dean is now drugged to the gills and rehab starts Monday for 3 to 6 months. Now I have to keep a silly Weimaraner puppy from thinking that Dean is here to play 24/7. That is not an easy task but then neither will be having Dean home 24/7 for the next 3 to 6 months. Thanks to everyone that sent us a "thumbs up". hugs to all from Dean, Cherie and FyonaMoonDancer

I read a piece in the waiting room of the vet while I was waiting for work on my now gone elkhound, sweet Toby, to the effect that you should always overlap dogs. When one is getting old and waning, get a puppy. It not only helps you move on from the inevitable loss, it helps the older dog too. There was a story about an old dog that was diagnosed with something terminal with 6 mo or so to live. They got a puppy, and the puppy seemed to invigorate the old man, and he ended up living another 18 months.

Mike,

Helen and I have two cats and to solve that problem we set up a SIGNIFICANT donation to the RSPCA in our wills here in Sydney
contingent on them taking in Stumpy and Shadow and taking care of them until they pass away. They are 14 years old now and hopefully
they'll go before we do, however, you never know!

Regards,
Rob M.

He will feed on your body until help arrives. <Grin> Least that you could
do, or me for that reason. <Grin> On a more serious note, probably a good
idea to make adoption arrangements in advance of your passing. I am
currently on dog number 7, a Papillion. 2 Years old. Might outlive me. That
last trip to the vet with an old friend is no walk in the park. I cried
like a baby every time.

You need to ask a Canadian lawyer.  What the Georgia lawyer told our club was, remember, in this country, dogs are personal property.  And while this has a lot of positive points, it means the dog is a part of your estate.  Now, it seems resaonable to appoint an executor, and bequeath the dog as property in your will.  However, what happens until the will is probated?  If the dog is registered, put whichever friend or relative is going to care for the dog on its registration as co - owner.  Then, there's no worry that the dog will be held for probate.  That person owns it, takes it home, that's the end of the situation.  For a non-registered dog, still have a friend or family member claim the dog and keep it.  If you die intestate, supposedly the dog, as part of your property, is held by the state or county until your estate is settled.   Better the dog stays with a friend or kinsman.  General rule is, in any official action, the dog always
loses.
Realize, once you assume room temperature, the one person who won't be concerned about your pet is you.  Consequently, it's probably to your best interest to make arrangements before you leave.  Several people will take care of our menagerie should Paula and I both suddenly die, and have the means of getting the animals quickly.  And, while I fully intend to leave at age 100 from a bad case of Bridge Abutment, I'm covered for an earlier departure anyway.

Hmmm, this will go beyond the usual ball and cookie discussions !

I have a vet who makes house calls for euthanasia.  It isn't any easier for us, but it is for the dog.

In our case it is almost certain our Chloe, a Goffin's Cockatoo, will outlive us, by many years. She has an expected lifespan of 40-60 years. Our plan, not yet run past our attorney, is to set up a trust that will own Chloe so we avoid the "personal property" part of these problems. There are more concerns yet to be addressed. Ah the trials of FID involvement (feathered/furred kids).

My fear is that my dog will out live me...what happens to him then?

Mike in NS

In our case it is almost certain our Chloe, a Goffin's Cockatoo, will outlive us, by many years. She has an expected lifespan of 40-60 years. Our plan, not yet run past our attorney, is to set up a trust that will own Chloe so we avoid the "personal property" part of these problems. There are more concerns yet to be addressed. Ah the trials of FID involvement (feathered/furred kids).

So how is this GMC related??? Well we originally bought the GMC so we could haul the birds feathered butt around with us after we lost the only bird sitter we could trust.

G'day,

If you, Lauralynn, and Chloe are going to be on the road this summer, is it safe to assume that you will attend the GMCMI Amana
Colonies Convention?

If so Helen and I will definitely attend to help you celebrate Smurfies baptism!

Regards,
Rob M.

Yep - Amana would be on the list. The last GMC convention the 3 of us attended, without the GMC we had just bought, was Amana. So we know how to get there. <grin>
