Netters
A) Is there any way to tell what gear set is in a final drive looking only
at the outside?
B) Do all the 'newer' gear sets fit inside the old case with no
alterations whatsoever?
I think the answers are A=No and B=Yes
So what should I be counting to determine the gearing after I remove the
cover?

Mike,
Count the number of teeth on the ring gear and divide it by the number of teeth on the pinion gear. It might be hard to see the pinion gear to get a count. Another way is to rotate the ring gear and count how many revolutions the pinion gear turns. For instance, just a little over three turns would be a 3.07, a little over 3-1/2 turns would be a 3.55. etc.

Mike,
I think you'll find the teeth count on the ring gear. Useful if you have
trouble counting only once around. :-)
