Took my first short (100 mile) trip after installing a 3:55 final drive. Replaced it for the performance reasons and also because a whine had developed which I was told could be the final drive. Noise was heard mostly upon deceleration.
With the new final drive, the whine is much louder, is heard again on deceleration, but now also at low speeds, usually below 35-40 mph. It is a smooth whine. Transmission ( just serviced new fluid and filter) shifts and operates fine. Used the proper gear oil as per instructions by Jim K.
Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi,
That's a bit of a known issue with that ratio. Not sure why. However, we've
had ours in for about 4000 miles and it does get better and now to the point
where I would have to listen hard to hear it. I considered both the 3.55 and
the 3.70 on our 23' coach but did not want to run the engine outside the
torque curve so opted for the 3.55 which for us is just fine even when
towing. On a 26 I'm not sure. I'm actually more concerned about the noise
from my two fuel pumps that feed the EFI.
Thanks

R.D. It is quite common for newly installed final drive gears to whine for
the first few thousand miles. The usual proceedure would be to drive it
like you rented it, only after a 250 mile careful run in. After 3500 miles
or so, raise the coach, remove the cover on the final drive and completely
clean out the area under the ring gear and the cover itself. Do not be
surprised to find very fine shiny looking particles in the fluid that you
drain. If the 2 piece gasket is intact, it probably is ok to re use it. Pay
very strict attention to the top of the final drive case where the
labyrinth passages in the gasket are. DO NOT block that vent hole. Make
very sure that vent is open. If you do not, I will gurantee that your final
drive, and perhaps your transmission will leak as well. Refill the final
drive with what the factory recommends, or it's synthetic equal. This
should assure you many miles of worry free operation. The noise comes from
the fact that the gears are not micro polished, and they have to mate into
each other. (break in)

Hi
I replaced our final drive with a Jim K 3:70 in August. It too has a slight
whine on deceleration, but it has gotten quieter in the 900 miles we've put on
since installing it. It's also much quieter when warm vs. cold. This is
very typical from what I've heard, don't worry, just drive and enjoy.
You have not heard a final drive whine until you've driven about 70 miles with
no oil in it........then you hear a whine, growl, grind, clunk, etc........just
ask me how I know !!! <GRIN>

As everyone else has said, been there done that. I put my 3.55 in last summer and it whined for the first 100 miles noticeably, then started getting quieter and, after a couple thousand miles, I don't hear it at all. The mechanic I use said it has happened on almost all the 3.55's he's installed for a while.

My coach whines a bit at speed, but I have a power drive 3.50:1 with the chain plus a 3.21:1 diffy from an eldo, so my RPM's are a bit higher then a 3.07:1 at speed. since my old tranny was crap, I never really drove it at speed so cannot remember what I sounded like.

Jim, what's encroachment on your differentials? Were you referring to my post? (it was quoted). The power drive was around long before, and I got the Diffy for free. I think a power drive and 3.70 would be way overkill...
