How are the Google groups coming?

I would like to see and Open Mike , connection for all of the GMC RALLYS
, this year.

Ken B used to do one for the GMCMI - like the Balloon rally for MRC's .

I know someone was testing this a few months ago using Google+ groups.
wondering if it is possible, or should we use some other facility like
SKYPE?

I would like to see
- a "members only" for the live version, ( would help the membership sign,
up;>),
- printed notes for after the rally
- does not have to be interactive (too hard to administer)

I lost ,who was doing this testing, but I am interested in trying to get
this going

Gene,

You're right, haven't heard much from the googlers. I get together on
occasionally on Skype with a group. Works well and we have anywhere from
4-8 individuals at a time. Great way to keep in touch with friends all over
the country. Far better then tin cans and strings!

Googlers, where are you?

Back when Ken B was setting these things up, I believe it was on eQSO which was via a private link provided to us by John Brewer in Salt Lake City . Used to have a weekly "GMC chat" where there were probably 8 to 10 regulars and 2 or 3 "guests". The eQSO link went away for some reason a little over 2 years ago. I really enjoyed the things Ken set up on it. I used the link right up until a couple years ago to talk to my brother in Florida. When the link went away, we tried to switch to SKYPE. Couldn't get my bro's end to work. Anyhow, eQSO is still out there. Just have to find someone with a server to sponsor it.

Mr: ERF The google EFI group is going strong and is great. Gmail has a voice and video chat and I have used it for a few years. There is a provision to add members to the chat session but I have not tried it yet. About the time Win 7 came out Gmail started having trouble with the chat plugin not loading on start up. I did work around this by going to the thread installed in C/user(me)/appdata(hiddenfile)/local/Google/google plugin and right clicking and putting a shortcut on my desktop to open manually when I wanted to use it. Later on I realized I had a version on my Vista laptop that still worked on all brousers and copied it and pasted it on my Win 7 and it worked as it should. Google has been working on this for a while.
As usual my shadetree fixes went on deft ears as I am not a "bonafied tech".
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/chat/thread?tid=3d3620f35c86a240&hl=en&fid=
and
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/chat/thread?hl=en&tid=6329c3808e8a098a
It would be easy to set up a voice video conference at a Rally for tech sessions for "members only" or anybody for that matter, but then it would defeat the purpose of going to the rally and holding the session for ransome on a password protected web site.

You just need to ask John to restart the server.

The problem we had with Skype was one of bandwidth. 4 to 5 people is the most it can candle concurrently.

By placing the eQSO server at John's ISP location we had almost unlimited bandwidth and 100% availability. With the voice compression used it took next to no bandwidth and even dial up users could participate.

The reason I quit doing it was it took all of my time at the rallies to broadcast and monitor it. Every one at the rally wanted to do other things at the rally. Can you blame them? They just spent $600 to $1000 to get there and attend. While non-attendees were the benefactors of the service.

One time we also set up a video conference that worked well. It was the same problem. No one wanted to run it at the rally site.

So if you do this, think about how much manpower it will require and who is going to supply that manpower.

The first one we did was at an Eastern States rally in Elkhart. I did not mind doing it because I was on crutches anyway and not getting around much for the other things.

It does not require much bandwidth at the site. We actually ran that one on a dial up pay phone telephone line. You do remember dial up from way back when? Don't you?

Good luck in your rally endeavors in voice, video, or both.

I do not think technology will be a problem. It is the manpower to run it at a rally and a server location with enough bandwidth.

A couple of IP cameras signed onto a distribution server of some type would do it. The end users look and listen to the server with a web browser. We found that you need to serve about 50 concurrent users.

Gene,

Perhaps you are thinking of Richard Sowers. He set up a few "hangouts" on google plus. I participated in two. At that time, you had to have a gmail address to participate on G+. I believe I now have 36 GMCnetters in my GMC google circle -- including you.
The nice thing about using G+ -- google maintains the support.
I do not know how it would work with someone giving a presentation to a live group -- while others were on G+.
If you want to try it -- we can set up a hangout -- send invitations and see..
