I can't say enough about the help we received from the Mahowald family from Jordan, Minnesota. After receiving our newly purchased GMC we got about 30 miles down the road when the front right caliper stuck with pressure on the disc. We went to four different shops looking for help but everyone was tied up for a couple of days. We are 900 miles from home and stuck without a clue as to how we are going to get home. Than I remembered the Black List that I had tucked away in my suitcase and asked a customer at a repair shop if anyone on the list was near by. Fortunately twenty miles away was the Mahowald family. After purchasing some tools from a Napa dealer I bleed off the front caliper to release the brake and clamped the brake line shut.
This allowed me to travel to the Muhowald shop were one of the sons(Barry)does auto repair. They had the front brakes off in no time, went to put on a set of calipers they had in stock and found out they were the wrong ones. Ordered out the right calipers and got them installed. The other brother Bobby(Master Cabinet Maker) called Applied GMC asked about what could have caused the caliper to bind. They were told that the insides of the hydraulic hose had collapsed. No parts store in town had the hoses, they had to be shipped in. Bobby and I went over to his house to remove the hydraulic hose from their GMC (One Ton Conversion) to try to get us down the road. This hose did not fit. It is 9:30 at night and last hope of getting on the road is gone. We were loaned one of there vehicles so we could get something to eat and find a room for the night. The next morning back at the shop Bobby told me about a Handi-cap van conversion place that sold captain chairs for $200 a pair (Rollx in Savage Mn.). Off we went and picked up new leather captain chairs. By the time we got back the brake lines were installed and they were wrapping up everything. Again I can't say thank-you enough to the Muhowald Family.
By the way they have been on the black List for 2 years and I was the first one to call them, what service I received.

How hot did the wheel get? You might need to grease the bearings and check the seal.

Bruce,
Glad to hear you made it home. It was our pleasure to help you and your wife out. I hope you get many years of enjoyment out of your GMC. Hopefully our paths will cross again someday.

I took a laser thermometer with me and the first time I checked the temp
was at 150 degrees by the time we got to the last repair shop I got a
reading of 450 degrees. Fortunately someone modified the bearing housing
and a grease Zerk was added to allow a couple of shots of grease into the
bearing.
That is one of the items of to do is to replace the front bearings and also
the cv boots.

You might find it cheaper to replace the front end with the one ton kit

Bobby Mahowald told me that they rebuilt the original front end including
having the cv joints rebuilt and it cost more than the One Ton did.
Switching over to the One Ton is in my bucket list. Safety issues will be
dealt with first (good article in bdub's site), reliability next, and than
the accessories (cabinets, dash, window coverings etc.).
