I am going to install new carpet in the cockpit of my coach and would like to provide some sound/thermal insulation.
I see that some have used Hush Mat; others have used Dyna Mat and James Hupy used some special unnamed foam carpet pad.
James, was the pad readily available from a carpet supplier/installer?.
Corey Jones had something installed at the TI Rally. Any one know what it was?
Do you install a regular carpet pad over the HushMat/DynaMat type products?
Any other suggestions or recomendations?
Thanks for the input.

From my audio days I learned a bit about soundproofing.
Mid and high frequencies are far easier to reduce than low frequencies.
Carpet and curtains help with the upper range but it takes
a much denser material for the lower range.
There is almost always additional weight involved when
exhaust and tire on pavement noise.
Mostly you get what you pay for, and the lows will cost much
more than the highs.
Let us know what worked for you.

I used a generic "dynamat" product that one of my distributors sell. Worked very well, kept the noise down a lot, and the floor is 100x cooler. The generic product was 1/2 the price of the real dynamat.

Michael,
Do you have a name for the "generic" Dynamat? Is it available to retail customers in California Will your distribitor sell and ship to California?
Bukzin,
From your experience can you recommend any product for deadening the engine compartment?
Thanks for the info.

While I am replacing the carpet in the cockpit I plan to remove all the carpet in the living area and install a floating floor of either vinyl or quality laminate. I expect that either will be much noisier than the old carpet and pad.
Is there anything (at a reasonable cost) to be placed under the laminate or vinyl flooring to mitigate the noise.
Would the paint product that Chuck Botts used be effective if it is applied to the top of the floor rather than under the floor
Any body have any suggestions for quietening the living area when hard surface flooring is installed?
Thanks for your help.

I watched the video yesterday that someone forwarded which showed a VW
restorer using a product called Quick Roof. He lined the rear seat area
and part of the inner fender wells with one roll (6" x 25'). I thought for
$17 tax included at the HD store I would give it a try, so I bought a roll
last night. Looks like it will certainly help. It is a 5 ply, puncture
resistant material that is aluminum faced and "rubber" or similar adhesive
backed product. I will do the hatch area first after preparing the surface
and then see how it goes. Might even be worth doing the cockpit floor area
as an underlayment. Ideally you would want to stop the noise/vibration
from underneath, but anything should help. And being a roofing material it
should help protect the wood sub-floor.
My 2 cents,
Good Luck,

Did you mean Home Depot? Which department did you find it?

Richard,
Yes, Home Depot in the roofing section. Yellow wrapped and a little
smaller in size then a 1 gallon paint can. It's closer to the roofing
misc. then the actual shingles. I did open it a few minutes ago and it
sure looks like it will make a difference. Years ago I had to pull an
interior door panel off my Mercedes 280S and a very similar material was
used on the center part of the door skin for noise and vibration absorption.
Label reads:
INSTANT WATERPROOF REPAIR
QUICK ROOF
I think it was $16.25 plus tax,

I found something similar on the door of a Late 70's Audi.
It was on the inside of the outer skin. The reason I was in there was that it had not been put on smoothly and had a pocket between the material and the metal skin. It collected and trapped water and the outer skin had rusted through.
While rusting shouldn't be a problem, trapped water could be. Put it on smooth and seal the edges good.

Search Ebay for Fatmat -- lots of different thicknesses and roll lengths. On a per square foot basis about the same as Quick Roof. Depends on whether you find it easier to work with 6 inch width or 30 inch.
They also have some very thick material and the paint-on solution.
Free shipping from some sellers.

Gene, Yes it is readily available from carpet retailers, but I do not know
if that includes the Marts. It is commonly known as "pet proof" carpet
underlayment pad. It is some kind of closed cell foam, with a fabric
backing on the down side, and a smooth plastic membrane bonded to the top
side. It is more expensive than the shredder foam and sisal type pads. What
I have is a light pale green in color. I find that it makes a swell pad to
lay on on the cold concrete floor also.
